to her than they would any other dog. You’ll need to be her advocates, not just her family! SW is a super snuggler and loves people. After she gets over the initial fear of a new person, she is immediately on her back asking for belly rubs! Her favorite thing to do is cuddle with you, any time, anywhere. She is house-trained and crate-trained, but will need to be kept in her crate when you are not at home, as she gets into trouble and gets so anxious over you not being there that she will potty in the house. She will do well with a family that will not leave her in the crate alone for most of the day. She has a puppy bladder and puppy energy, both of which need to be released throughout the day. Though she loves kids, Snow would do best in a home without small children because of how timid she is. She scares easily and kids can be loud and unpredictable! She likes other dogs and as far as we know, does okay with cats too. She just wants to play! While she would be okay in a home with no other pets, she would do best in a home with another dog that would help give her confidence and be a positive role model for her. As for her perfect home, this sweet girl would prefer a family who lives outside of the noisy city and on a quiet street. She is considered a flight risk and a fenced-in yard would be greatly beneficial, as she needs boundaries to feel secure-she tries to bolt in open spaces! We are working very hard on her being okay with walks, but aren’t totally there yet so a secured yard to get out her energy would be great! Her family would need to understand that SW isn’t a dog you can take on regular outings to the store or the beach. Even car rides give her major anxiety and places with noises and people make her stressed out. SW is very smart and picks up on things very quickly. She knows sit, lie down, gimme paw, and we are working on heel and stay! She is highly food motivated under the right circumstances. As far as puppies go, she is fairly well-behaved and is content to just sit and chew on her bones or Kong! It takes her a while, but she loves to play with toys in the yard once she is comfortable with you. This lovable puppy needs patience, love, and a lot of help with confidence, but will reward you with the best snuggles and kisses! Anybody would be lucky to have her!” Age: 7 months Weight: 32 lbs. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
