from the shelter, and they needed space for pets to wait to be reunited with their owners. Upon arrival Charlie seemed quiet and slow, almost elderly. It turns out however, he was gravely sick. Charlie spent a week and a half hospitalized after his neuter because he was so sick in his lungs, he refused to eat and dropped close to ten pounds. His head was covered in scars and wounds and he was also diagnosed with heartworm. He almost died in our care, but he never gave up. He fought as hard as he could and we fought with him, and this incredible little soul bounced back to life thanks to a group of volunteers and an animal hospital that cared enough about him to help him fight. Charlie is about 5 to 7 years young (hard to say for sure, he does have the most adorable gray beard but he seems extremely youthful, this is my best guess from living with him for 2 months!). He is a black and brindle Heinz 57, Texas mutt. He probably has some type of bully breed in him, maybe some lab, sometimes I see sharpei in his face… he’s the ultimate mutt which I absolutely love about him! He has soulful brown eyes that will read you like nothing you’ve ever met and a helicopter tail that will brighten any less than perfect day! He loves meal times, and eats in his crate. He isn’t a huge fan of confinement, he will use his crate willingly if the door is open but when closed he can be a bit of a nuisance, but we are working on it. I have found he does better if it’s covered. He is a perfect gentleman in the house though, and can be left alone for a work day outside of his crate just fine. He loves to play fetch and tuggie with almost any toy or ball. He loves chewing bones, bully sticks, rawhides, anything he can get his mouth on. He loves treats. He will play the cutest game of fetch/catch with himself outside. He is quite a personality. He loves to go for walks and is a big fan of car rides. He would be an excellent dog for a home that gets out, but not a lot. He wouldn’t mind getting out more, but he doesn’t require it. He does need some exercise but not overly energetic. He seems to enjoy meeting new people, especially kids. He is a 50 pound lap dog with lots of love and snuggles to give. He has been mistreated by people and takes a bit of time to warm up, but once you have his heart he is loyal to the core and will love you forever. His capacity for love has not diminished despite how humans have treated him, but he is slightly cautious. Charlie seems to be cat friendly (he currently lives with one and basically ignores her). He also lives with three foster siblings. He gets along with 2 of them perfectly, the third he does not get along with at all (except on walks and during yard time). I believe him to be mostly dog friendly, but I would be cautious and slow with introductions, treats, and other resources such as humans, meals, furniture, things of that nature. He loves to wrestle with my young female or will play a game of fetch with my older males (he seems to be okay with my oldest dominant male and doesn’t get along with my middle aged less dominant male except during walks and in the yard). I think Charlie could learn to live with almost any dog, but in order to be safe, I would suggest caution and slow introductions as with any new dogs meeting for the first time. He could also do well as an only dog, he isn’t the type of dog that needs other dogs around for support and guidance. Charlie is currently being treated for a couple of things left over from his near death experience but he is ready and eager to meet someone to spend the rest of his life with going on hiking adventures and lounging around watching Netflix afterward. He is neutered and up to date on all of his shots. Please give this handsome guy a chance to steal your heart, you won’t regret it! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
