riendly: No Kid friendly: Yes House trained: Yes Crate trained: TBD Energy level: Average History: Stray in KY Adoption Fee: $300 From the Foster: We have fostered for over 5 years, and I have to say that Jacob is one of the sweetest, easiest dogs we have ever fostered! We have 3 dogs of our own (35-75 lbs and ages 2-9) and he was fast friends with all of them. He has been wonderful with children at events and isn’t a huge jumper where he would knock them down. Jacob is an adorable little compact size and is smaller in person than he looks in pictures. He has a moderate energy level overall and is pretty calm for his age. He does love to play with other dogs, chew toys, and fetch, but in short bursts, then he wants to climb up in your lap on the couch. He’s a really loving and affectionate little guy, and would cuddle with you all day if you would let him! Jacob sleeps in our room at night on a dog bed. There are enough beds for each dog to have his or her own, but he chooses to snuggle up with our other young, smaller dog on her bed anyway and it’s the sweetest thing ever. Jacob attends doggy daycare if we’re going to be gone all day and he loves it. When he comes home, he’s completely done for the day and passed out on the couch for that much activity. He is house trained and working on basic obedience and crate training as he has just arrived in our home. He will go in the crate but cries. We crate him during the day if we leave and didn’t bring him to daycare, just because he’s a newer foster for us. He’s also learning to walk on a gentle leader since he is small but strong, and can pull on a leash. His only flaw that we have seen so far is that he does not get along with cats. So if you’re looking for an otherwise pretty much perfect, dog friendly, kid friendly, snuggle machine for your cat-free home, check out Mr. Jacob! All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities. I f you would like to meet/adopt this animal or anyone else, then please fill out an adoption application at http://secondhandhounds.org/adoption-information/ and the foster(s) will be in touch! Keep in mind that there may be multiple applicants applying for the same animal(s). You only need to complete 1 application for multiple animals that you're interested in. Note - We change an animal's listing to say "PENDING ADOPTION" when they already had a meet and greet with a family who plans to adopt that animal. We put "NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS" on a listing when an animal has multiple applications in and the foster has asked to stop accepting any more while they review the applications they've already received. If you would like to be a foster for Secondhand Hounds, then please fill out a foster application, http://secondhandhounds.org/fostervolunteer-information/fostering-101/ You can choose the type of animal you'd like to foster and we will supply everything you need (food, collar, bowls, crate, etc.) while the animal is in your care. Thanks for your interest in Secondhand Hounds!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
