eral months later the nurse had a baby and had to move in with her older sister in New Jersey. The sister is animal-phobic and won't let poor Nessie into her house because of her Pit Bull-looking facial features. Nessie went from being a beloved family pet to being confined by herself in the basement. I took Nessie away from this situation into my home about a week ago. Nessie is absolutely adorable - she is super affectionate and very playful. She loves to chase balls in the backyard and go for walks, but also is happy to snuggle and get belly rubs. She is totally non-aggressive and just wants to please. I have taken food and toys out of her mouth, corrected her behavior when she's gotten over-exuberant & she is just great - she just wants to be loved. She's also very smart - in the short time I've had her she's already learned some simple commands. I was hoping to make her a permanent part of my family but the problem is one of my dogs. I have a special needs dog who was born without eyes and who is also deaf - she's now 6 years old and is terrible with other dogs. Nessie just wants to play - she comes over wagging her tail to sniff and my dog attacks her. This has happened several times so I have to keep them apart. Nessie gets along great with my other dog - they play together and sleep together. But it's just not a safe situation for Nessie with my special needs dog so I'm reluctantly looking for a forever home for her. Nessie would do great in a family with other dogs - I'm not sure about cats. She'd be fine with older kids. She loves everybody - my only concern about babies or very little kids is that she's still an energetic puppy - she's learning not to jump up on people when she gets excited. Nessie is basically a sweet, friendly, loveable and loving girl who needs her own family. She does need to be spayed - if you meet her and want to adopt her I will either get her spayed before she goes home with you, or I will pay to have her spayed. If you think you are interested I will need two references and contact information for your veterinarian before you adopt her. I can be reached by email at: ejebtrmsn or on my cell: 201-274-3973. If I don't answer, leave a message and I will call you back.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
