Bluetick Coonhound-Unknown Mix Dogs For Adoption in Shakopee, MN, USA

Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound / Mixed. Hello, I'm Blue, a charming Bluetick Coonhound, a breed not often seen in Minnesota. I am either a purebred or close to it (of course I don't know, bu

t that's what the vet said) and I have many of the noted characteristics of the breed. At about 60 pounds and age 4, I am in the prime of my life and I have excellent manners. I am also an exceptionally bright and perceptive dog, my foster family has often found me simply watching events in the household and of course, anticipating next steps in our daily routine. I am housebroken, with a perfect record of zero accidents with my foster family. They also think that I have adjusted well to the rhythm of the home. I've been micro-chipped (ouch!) and neutered (don't remember that) and I am in excellent physical condition. Bluetick Coonhounds, being more of a southern breed, do not have much body fat nor an undercoat of fur like many of their northern brethren -- lucky for me, my foster family got me a fleece "jacket" to wear (blue, of course) and it keeps me warm on chilly winter walks outside. I've been told that I don't shed much, and while I don't enjoy baths, I do recognize and accept that this is part of the deal when living with humans. I am currently being treated for an ear infection and will need regular care of my ears as my long-eared hound breeding requires a bit of extra work to keep ears in good health. The ideal family for me would be active -- I am a hunting breed, and I love to get outdoors and sniff stuff, every day. There is just so much to enjoy outdoors!! I am also quite relaxed and pleasant to my humans when I've had enough exercise. A 30 minute morning walk plus a bit of playtime in the afternoon seems to be just right for me. A fenced yard with my forever family would be a plus -- I will follow my nose to sniff the most interesting things in the neighborhood, so I do need some limits set for me. My foster family says that I've been playful yet gentle with their teenage children, and I will admit, I do like a good game of tug of war. I will also contentedly gnaw on a bone if one is available. I also enjoy snuggling and cuddling but know that getting up on the furniture is not always acceptable -- I will defer to my humans and accept their rules in this regard. I am in a crate for the workday when my people are gone, although I really think I would behave myself very well and we don't need the crate. I leave my people alone when they are eating and know that I'm not supposed to be cruising for snacks in the kitchen. I do get a bit anxious at times when my people aren't around (but exercise seems to help me somehow) and I don't really like long car rides, but I do my best to please my people and generally I do stay out of trouble. I would love to find my forever home with a family who lives ideally out in the country, or at a minimum with a large fenced yard, and where I could get a good walk in every single day and sniff lots of interesting things. I will be a trustworthy and loving member of the family. I promise to be the best dog I can be -- and I will snuggle and cuddle with you and greet you with a warm welcome each time you come home :) Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Once the application is processed, a Wags representative will contact you, answer any questions you may have, and set up a time/location for a meet and greet! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
