summer and finally made the trip to America, ending up in Minnesota in November (2016). Cuba was used to being around other dogs but was unfamiliar with most other aspects of the human/pet world when he first arrived. He's really been loving sleeping on couches and playing with toys and getting lots of snuggles, but still gets easily scared! Cuba would be most comfortable in a home with another dog (that's when he really shines!) Since arriving, Cuba has successfully been potty trained and has kicked the nasty habit of marking his territory (yay Cuba!!!) He is also now crate trained as well, though he prefers to be out and about! He does like to chase and bark at the cats in his foster home. He can be relatively vocal at times, mostly when bothering the cats or when he's in his crate. He does tend to steal a shoe every now and then for chewing on, and he has nipped at the kids in the home, so he prefers a home with no kids or older/calmer/respectful kids (loud and fast moving humans of any age make him very nervous). He will come and sit next to his humans on the couch or in a chair, or lay at their feet, but isn't much of a lap dog. This pup has been through unimaginable things and therefore is very reserved with his affection. He will stay still while he is getting pets and he will give the occasional lick on your hand. Cuba loves to wrestle with dog friends, patrol for cats, chew on toys and take naps. Overall, he's a really laid back fella. After months in his foster home, he still gets nervous pretty regularly and will need a family that can respect his needs. Cuba needs a calm home, a dog friend, and humans that are willing to be slow and patient/gentle with him and have time to work with him. Due to his "ruff start," his progress may continue to be slow. If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal. Once we receive your application, a placement coordinator will be in contact with you as soon as possible. Please check out our website, www.ruffstartrescue.org for more details and additional pictures on any of our animals! All Ruff Start dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention (dogs) as well as heartworm tested (dogs). Ruff Start Rescue is a foster based rescue. Animals are located in homes throughout Minnesota. We do not have a facility where animals are kept. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
