about this fun loving girl? https://youtu.be/vnsq2chsgkQ Odessa is like your silly best friend who is always up for a good time, fiercely loyal, sometimes inappropriate, and can make anyone laugh. She may be from the South but she's not quite a lady. Odessa is the girl who burps, chews with her mouth open, slurps her water, and body bumps her friends when she is pumped up. She is a 50#, 2ish year old black dog of unknown origin. She has an overbite, sleek fur, tons of floppy skin, tiny ears and adorable wrinkles on her forehead. Our best guess is that Odessa is a Shar Pei/Labrador mix. We may not be 100% sure what Odessa is, but we do know that she is an awesome girl who loves to have fun! In the Fall of 2017, Odessa found herself pregnant and alone, wandering a busy street in North Louisiana. She was a taken in by a local humane society where she delivered and raised 10 healthy pups. Odessa was an excellent mom but after her pups were weaned, she had no trouble going back to her own puppyish personality. She moved to foster care in December and she keeps her foster mom laughing! Odessa is fostered with 3 senior, non-playful dogs who can’t stand her. They growl at her on the daily but she doesn’t mind and still loves them. Her foster mom tries to take her for lots of play dates with friends’ dogs. Odessa has learned lots of manners while in foster care. Odessa is 100% house trained and has never had an accident while in foster care. Her foster family has a doggie door and she immediately took to it. She sleeps quietly all night in her crate and is crated when her foster family is away. Her foster mom can often take Odessa to work with her and she is the office greeter and loves meeting new people. She loves to ride in the car, is a great companion for errands and will happily wait patiently on the backseat. She knows how to sit and loves any kind of treat or food. When she is really relaxed or napping, the tip of her tongue slips out of her mouth and it is oh so adorable! Older kids and a semi-active home would be best for this goofball. Odessa may be a little rough around the edges but her heart is solid gold. If you are looking for a dog who will keep you laughing and love you like crazy, “Dessa” is the pup for you. Upon rescue she did test positive for heartworm but breezed through treatment and is heartworm negative. Please email TheChiSociety@gmail.com to apply for Dessa! All of our dogs are spayed/ neutered before adoption. Adult dogs have had their core vaccines---parvo, distemper, bordatella, and rabies, All dogs are tested and are heartworm negative. In addition they have been de-wormed and kept on heartworm prevention and flea prevention while in foster care. Most dogs come with a micr-chip already implanted. Adoption fees range from 235.00- 275.00 depending on the dog. Many times the adoption fee does not even cover the cost of all of the vetting we have done for a dog. In addition, some of our dogs are fostered in the South and come up once adopted---There is an additional transport fee for these dogs. Please contact the person listed in the bio for more information on a particular dog. We are very careful in placing our dogs--and look for the best home for each dog--All of our dogs are fostered in private homes, with fosters who get to know the dogs and know the types of home that would be best for each dog. Thank you for considering a rescued pet and we look forward to helping you find a great dog match--

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
