is a tiny little girl that is in the prime of her life! Piper is a 9-year-old Dachshund x Chihuahua mix (aka a “Chiweenie”). She is approximately 6 pounds of activity. Don’t tell Piper she is middle aged, because she certainly doesn’t act like it. Piper was surrendered to a high kill shelter in Louisiana through no fault of her own. It happened that night that a volunteer needed a shelter dog to go on TV for a promotional spot, and Piper was chosen! She then stayed with the volunteer that night. She was a dream and we knew we couldn’t send her back to a shelter. She has been in foster care ever since and is now ready for her forever home up North! Piper LOVES people.. Little people, big people, it doesn’t matter as long as she can give them kisses!! Piper is very energetic and would love a family that would play outside with her and take her to the park!! Piper loves to ride in the car as long as she can ride in your lap. She has gotten along with every dog and cat she has met. Piper sleeps under the covers and right between her foster parents, which has led to her getting squished a couple times. She stays in a kennel during the day. Piper has never chewed inappropriately, Piper is house and kennel trained, but has had a couple accidents if we don’t let her out often enough. Piper is a food hound and loves table scraps. She will search them out at all cost. Piper is not a barker, so she would work in any home situation. She walks well on a leash, but does have a reverse sneeze, so I suggest a harness to protect her throat. Piper wants to be in your lap at all times. She doesn’t like it if she has to lay alone. She also like to give kisses, a lot, so we are working on some manners. She has shown a want to bolt out the front door, so we are also working on that. Piper would be a great little girl for any family. She is great with my infant that likes to pull her big ears, but may do better in a home with slightly older children that are less likely to step or fall on her. Piper photos: photos.app.goo.gl/JFJJcTs3gnW5Cr5e6 Piper videos: youtu.be/W0VEbDNS4Nk youtu.be/OGglBPut6O0 Piper is spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, heartworm negative and current on monthly heartworm prevention, and current on flea/tick prevention. Please email us at The ChiSocietygmail to apply for this wonderfully big eared girl!!!!! All of our dogs are spayed/ neutered before adoption. Adult dogs have had their core vaccines---parvo, distemper, bordatella, and rabies, All dogs are tested and are heartworm negative. In addition they have been de-wormed and kept on heartworm prevention and flea prevention while in foster care. Most dogs come with a micr-chip already implanted. Adoption fees range from 235.00- 275.00 depending on the dog. Many times the adoption fee does not even cover the cost of all of the vetting we have done for a dog. In addition, some of our dogs are fostered in the South and come up once adopted---There is an additional transport fee for these dogs. Please contact the person listed in the bio for more information on a particular dog. We are very careful in placing our dogs--and look for the best home for each dog--All of our dogs are fostered in private homes, with fosters who get to know the dogs and know the types of home that would be best for each dog. Thank you for considering a rescued pet and we look forward to helping you find a great dog match--

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
