Foster Home Feedback * NO Cats 3/18/18: Are you looking for a best friend that enjoys the outdoors? Look no further, Cheesy’s your man! When Cheesy first came to my home, he was very skittish and shy, but by day 2 he warmed up and has now become our shadow. He is still skittish of males and takes a little longer to warm up to them. Several times during the night, he will check on the whole family, to make sure everyone is all right and where they should be, he will then go and lay back down. Prior to coming into my home, Cheesy had surgery on his eyelids for entropion, which is a medical condition in which the eyelid (usually the lower lid) folds inward and had to wear a cone. He didn’t much care for the cone and at times let it be known and earned the nickname Wreck-it Ralph. He now has the cone off and is one happy boy and is no longer Wreck-it Ralph. He is well behaved and does not jump on the bed or furniture, even when invited up. Even though there are three dog beds, he likes to sleep on the cool floor and boy can he snore when he is tired. Cheesy LOVES to sleep in front of our glass storm door or just lay in front of it looking out. He also LOVES being outside and would rather be out there instead of inside. He would do great in a home with a fenced in yard. We are working on sit, stay, come and bed. Cheesy is doing great with sit and bed, but needs more work on stay and come. He loves to have his head, ears and under his chin scratched and rubbed and will nudge you if you stop too early. He's so cute and the fur on his head is so soft and is calming to pet. He has earned the nickname of Squeezy Cheesy Cheesy is a big boy and doesn’t realize how big he is. He is clumsy around my 1 and 2-year-old grandsons, so he will need to have some training on how to play with younger children. I have a 6-year-old granddaughter and he becomes a little too excited when he plays with her, so he will need to be trained to dial it back a little bit. He loves being outdoors in our fenced backyard or tie-out line in the front yard. In the backyard, he likes to chase squirrels, rabbits and play with the neighbor’s dogs through the fence. When he had his cone on, he liked to use it as a shovel and throw snow everywhere or lay in the snow and eat it. Out in the front, he likes to sit or lay on our deck and just watch the action in the neighborhood and the traffic. He’s not much of a barker, except when outside and someone or something gets a little too close to the house, but won’t bark for long. He is well behaved and has been a great joy to have in our home and he has provided us with many laughs. Cheesy has not had any accidents in the house and he will let you know when he needs to go out, by either a few small woofs, pawing at your legs or doing the doggy pee pee dance, all the while staring at you. He is treat motivated and if Cheesy sees someone going into the kitchen, he is right behind you looking for a treat or hoping you drop something on the floor. If he really, really wants a treat, he will go and sit in front of the refrigerator until you give him one and once the fridge is open, he likes to stick his head in and see what is in it. Cheesy loves going for car rides and makes a great backseat co-pilot. When we stop at our various destinations, it never fails, he gets a lot of attention and compliments on how cute he is and such soulful brown eyes. So, if you are single and looking for that special someone, Cheesy would make a great wingman and a date magnet. Cheesy is looking for his forever home where he can play outside with his new best friend. So please consider Cheesy and make your home his home. 2/12/18 Volunteer Feedback: Cheesypoof is such a gentle boy. He's pretty shy but doesn't mind being touched. A good way to pet him is to start petting him gently from under his snout and slowly make your way up to behind his ears. He seemed to really enjoy scratches behind his ears. I'm sure he'll get over his shyness as he's around people more and more, but for now, he just enjoys doing his own thing while you admire his beauty. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
