or help in locating his family. He was not neutered or microchipped, so not likely a rescue dog. Our vet reached out to see if we could take him in, and thankfully one of the staff members offered to foster him. Radar is being fostered with two human parents, two dogs under 25lbs and two cats, and does well with every member of the family. His foster mom, Kendal, says he's been fun to foster and describes him as a very sweet boy with lots of energy who loves to play. Radar is very adaptable and had very little issue making himself at home. He's good with the two dogs in his foster home, but at times can be annoying to their older dog. Radar has a lot of puppy energy and would be best paired with another young, playful dog. He loves the cats and is very respectful of them. He will play with the kitties as long as they will let him, and when they are tired, he leaves them alone. Radar loves being outside in the backyard and will run laps with the other dogs and chew on sticks. He's a young pup who needs toys to entertain him - ropes, bones, and squeaky toys are all fun in his book.. A home with another playful pup and a fenced backyard where he can run and play is preferred, or he needs an active owner who can give him several long walks a day. Radar is still an adolescent and has only been in his foster home for a week and is learning the rules of home life. He's crate trained, and his foster mom has been using the crate every day. While he will whine when first put in, he does settle down. He's working on potty training and never has potty accidents in his crate. He knows to go potty outside but hasn't yet learned to let you know when he needs to go out. He needs regular breaks and restricted freedom as he learns the rules. Currently, Radar gets most of his exercise in the yard vs. regular walks, so like all young pups, he will need some practice on leash skills. Kendal describes Radar as a confident, social, and friendly dog. He greets people with a lot of enthusiasm and has done very well with everyone he has met. He has not shown any signs of aggression and is submissive when meeting other dogs. He is also very snuggly, and when it's time to nap, he always wants to be right next to you on the couch. This lovable, playful, active pup will make an excellent family dog and bring a lot of fun and joy into your life. Apply today to welcome him home. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
