eeds a little time to trust and settle in. He's being fostered with multiple other dogs and cats, and would do best in a calm home with a pup companion to help build his confidence. Even though he is submissive with everyone, JD really enjoys being around people. He has a moderate energy level and is an affectionate, snuggly dog once he gets to know you. He takes treats gently from your hand and will allow you to bathe, groom, or put a harness on him without issue. His foster mom, Tammy, says he's very comfortable with the family now, and loves to give kisses and nibbles, and will snuggle up with you when it's bedtime. He's playful in the yard with the other dogs, but calm in the house. He's crate trained, housetrained, and does OK on leash, but needs more practice. JD's been living in a quiet, country setting with a large fenced yard and gets his daily exercise romping around with the other dogs. He will not make a good city dog and has some flight tendencies if he's startled by a sudden noise. He needs to be in a quiet neighborhood and calm home, and older kids are probably best. He's only been in his foster home a few weeks, and home life is new to him. Once he learns to trust, he will be a wonderful companion. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 9/15/19 JD has been with us a week..He is such a polite young man, so sweet and a real gentle He has such soulful eyes and just enjoys being near his people. He gets along very well with our three dogs, and dogs he meets on the street." Our Labs are 12 and don’t have the wherewithal to get away from a rambunctious dog, so JD is the perfect little dog because he just stops by and lays a smooch on them and then quietly moves on. He isn’t an alpha, he's more submissive, and takes the lead from, LG, our little terrier. Every day he learns more and more to embrace family life in our house with a quiet neighborhood. He is a cautious pup who is learning the ropes. When he is concerned or alarmed by a new noise or a quick movement, he retreats to a safe distance to observe. He will then re-approach to get back into the mix. He is doing soooo well! His confidence is building with every exposure. He learns quickly and takes his lead from our dogs... If they aren’t alarmed, he realizes he shouldn’t be either. JD has learned to use the dog door to get in and out, and is housetrained. He is starting to grab toys and play... he will even chase his tail! Hilarious. But he is a mellow dog for sure. We have a large crate for him in our bedroom. He used it a lot to self regulate when he first arrived and got a little overwhelmed. We keep the crate door open and he will go in and take naps or find toys and take them in there. He doesn’t go in as much anymore - He likes the couch now, just like our other dogs. We do crate him at night. but I'm sure in a week or so he won't need the door locked anymore. He sleeps very soundly and wakes us up at first light to go potty. For a pup who has never been on a leash before he does really well. I take him with my small terrier and walk them together. A little more practice and he will be perfect on a leash. JD could use some basic training - come - sit - lay down- stay. But first things first... We are still getting him acclimated to his new life. This guy is an excellent family dog. A calm household is a must for him. An adult dog who is also not to dominating would make a great companion for this loving boy." FOSTER MOM UPDATE 9/22/19 "JD has been with us two weeks and has completely settled in. He loves my husband, and our 16 year old son, and gets along great with our pack. Having other behaved and calm dogs around has really helped him adjust to family life. He is the kind of dog that is influenced by watching our dogs.... sort of the concept “see one, do one.” We were just discussing that everyday he surprises us with a “new dog joy” activity. He is such a sweet and gentle boy. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He is curious and cautious, and I really do appreciate that about him. This helps me anticipate and trust his response to new situations. While JD has a little white around his mouth, that is just his coloring...he is NOT an older dog. He is young, moderately active, and likes to play, but also mellow when we are home working, watching TV, getting homework done or other indoor activities. He just finds a comfy spot nearby and rests while we get things done. He gets soooo excited for his walks and loves to play in the backyard and chase chipmunks, squirrels and birds. He is really a joy to have around, and has endeared himself to our family. He is going to make a great addition to his forever family." Apply today! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
