My name is Aza and I am so excited to begin my retirement and live out my golden years with you! Life has not been kind to me in my younger years. I don’t like to talk about my past, so my rescuers don’t know much about my story. All they know is I was living on a golf course, scavenging to survive, when rescue came and saved me. Now I live in a foster home, sleep on this incredible soft thing called a bed, eat three meals a day (and I don’t even have to hunt for them – my people just set them down in front of me!), and enjoy lots of love and snuggles. At first this was all so weird to me…I don’t think I have ever been in a house before! Now, I love it and I can’t wait to find my true home and begin my retirement with my forever family. After all the tough years, I just want to relax and enjoy the good life with a loving family. I want to sleep in a soft bed, have my belly rubbed and get gentle kisses, relax by your side as we watch a movie, cuddle close to my people, oh and don’t forget the food – I sure do love mealtime! What a comfort to know I don’t have to hunt in garbage cans or beg for food anymore. Life sure has changed for me! I am still learning about the sounds and routines of being in the house. I am working hard on house-training and will go to the door when nature calls to let you know I need to use the facilities. I like other dogs, but I think I would much rather be your one and only. As I am experiencing love for the first time in my life, I want to soak it all up and be the center of canine attention! I do enjoy a feline friend though. Overall, my needs are simple – lots of love, some dog kibble, and a warm bed. In return, I will give you my full devotion and all of my love. I will warn you – I have nine years of saved-up love ready to give, so there is quite a bit of love coming your way! Aza is a gentle, sweet senior who has lived a tough life on her own for some time, scavenging for food and finding shelter from the weather wherever she could. We are so happy to help her get the golden retirement she so richly deserves. Aza would be best in a quieter home where her people will be home with her often. She absolutely loves to lay in a cozy bed near you and just be close to you. Aza would enjoy being the only dog in your life because she loves and deserves all the attention, but she does like cats and is willing to share you with feline friends. To experience the love of a senior dog is to experience a deep devotion like no other. Though you may not get as many years together as with a puppy, these golden years will be full of unwavering love and true appreciation. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
