and loves kids as well, but due to her age, she would prefer to live in a quiet home with no children. She is house and crate trained, she ignores the cats in her foster home, and she can stay home alone in the house without getting into anything. She is looking for a family or individual who will love her, show her the kindness and attention she so well deserves, and who will give her a comfy, warm place to sleep. At age 9+, she may look a little grey, but don't let a little grey fur deter you from getting the best dog ever that you will get to spend lots of quality years with. Come and meet Nahla. General Information on the Benefits of Adopting and/or Fostering an Older Dog: If you have an active life and don't have a lot of extra time but really want a dog or you don't want to have to go through all the work of training a dog, you might want to consider the benefits of owning an older dog. Most dogs in their later years of life are a bit more settled and can usually be left home alone for several hours with access to a doggy door or even can wait to go out. They are often much better on the leash as they are not quite as strong as they once were and they are also calmer. Seniors sleep a bit more than other dogs so are not as concerned about being left alone. While they still need exercise and love playtime, you'll find that seniors need less exercise and playtime. They normally are house-trained and have good house manners. Seniors make wonderful companions as they are very loyal and loving and they somehow know you are saving their life. You just might find out they are the perfect age of dog for you. The adoption includes the altering of the dog, current vaccinations, and microchipping.   3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
