o meet her. She was rescued back in October and was obviously not living her best life. She was nicknamed 'the snapping turtle' as she struggled a little to trust her human. We quickly realized just was neglected and needed to feel better. We set out to do just that...make her feel better! She came to us underweight, with a horrible skin condition, two inflamed ears, a cherry eye, dry eyes, and bad teeth. We believe she had also given birth to many litters over the years. We are guessing she is around 8-10 years old. It was time to give her what she deserved. Attention, love, solid meals, and veterinary care. Months later, we are happy to report she has gone through a wonderful transformation. She was spayed, was given a dental, and her cherry eye was surgically fixed. She now gets medication for her dry eyes, her arthritis, and a daily pill to get her allergies in check. Her fur has all grown back. She now plays with toys, will play with some of the resident cats, sleeps in bed with her foster human, and seems so much happier and healthier. She does well with other dogs. Her new forever home will need to commit to the following: 1) Lots of love of course! 2) The cost of daily meds (which can all be given in her food) 3) Fenced in yard 4) Walking on a harness 5) Regular visits to the groomer 6) Yearly wellness exams One must be financially able to keep her on her medication for her dry eyes, arthritis, and allergies. Being a senior dog, staying up-to-date on her care at the vet will be very important. She doesn't love going to the groomer, but has been several times while in foster care. A local downriver groomer has learned how to work with her. Because of her chronic dry eyes going untreated for so long, she doesn't not love her eyes messed with. So cleaning them can become difficult. She will give a snap every now and again; therefore, we are looking a home without young kids. She still has a little left of her snapping turtle ways :-) She has done well with her house training, but we noticed she likes to pee on rugs. Her current foster home has wooden floors and no rugs...and she does well. We are not confident she would do well in a carpeted home. If you think you may be a good match for Francine, feel free to contact us at infosheltertohome. We can start the application and conversation to see if you might have what Francine is looking for! **All Shelter to Home animals are fully vetted per their age. We believe in pediatric spay and neuter. All animals will be spayed or neutered, tested for FIV/FeLV or heartworm, given age-appropriate boosters and rabies, dewormed, flea treated, and anything extra that is needed to give this animal a wonderful forever life in a permanent home. Adoption fees are usually $100 for cats and between $150-$250 for dogs, unless the pet is sponsored or we are running a promotion.**

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
