Anyone wanting to adopt a German Shepherd MUST have knowledge about their needs. These are very intelligent dogs that need lots of exercise, both physically and mentally. Please discuss and consider if you are now, and will be in the foreseable future, in a financial position to provide to the dogs needs, unexpected vet bills, and common health issues specific to the breed. PHEOBE was transferred from a vet tech friend who needed help finding homes for the dogs she has saved from euthanasia in Texas. She is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick-disease tested; Negative and micro-chipped. She is around a year old. She has had her front leg amputated and so is a TRI-POD! Pehobe is a sweet girl who is a little sad as she left her best friend (A pit-mix) back in Texas as the rescue didn't have the money or space to take her also. We are hoping that the lucky family who falls in love and adopts Pheobe would at least consider adopting her best friend, who we will have transported up to Texas. The important thing is to find Phoebe her own forever home though, so it is not a requirement. Pheobe is a sweet, quiet, gentle girl, she gets along great with all other dogs and the puppies just love crawling and jumping on her, or cuddling up when it is time to rest. She lives in the communal room in the kennel building with some other dogs and pups and does great, she uses the dog door to go in and out as she pleases and has not had any accidents inside. I would think she is most likely house-trained, but might need to learn how to let you know she needs to go outside. She rides great in the car and loves to go on adventures, having lost a leg does not stop this girl and the more activity and exploring the sights, sounds and smells the world has to offer the happier she is. she would love to go for day trips to the beach, lake or on short hikes. She loves to lie outside soaking up the suns rays and when inside snuggle with the pups on the elevated dog bed. I am sure if she was in the house she would be wanting to snuggle up to the humans sharing the love this precious girl has to give. We recommend all families work on basic and advanced training with their new best friends. By working together boundaries and expectations can be set and both Pheobe and her family can learn each others body language and personalities which in turn will form a stronger bond and mutual understanding. PHEOBE is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements. Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org PHEOBE is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
