mom will post more as she gets to know me. 2/28/17 Update from the foster mom: Meet Garrett. He's new around here, the newest member of our foster family. He's a pretty shy guy; but after only a few hours with us he took a treat from me and even took one from Eli, and let Eli pet him as a reward. We'll keep working on his confidence in hopes he'll be a sassy, silly Peke in no time. He's available for adoption through pncmidwest.org. 11/19/16-From the foster mom: Garret does take some time to warm up to new people. When he first arrived, I thought he liked men better than women because he seemed to like my male friends and looked for attention from them. He is still fearful of being picked up but no longer runs all over the house when it's time for bed (all the dogs sleep on my bed at night). Sometimes, I will say "night-night time" and he will go into my bedroom and sort of look to be picked up, but usually I have to find him and pick him up. He is working on housebreaking, but still doesn't understand we go outside for that, but he has learned to go potty on newspapers. He lives with my three pekes and he lives with a big dog as well. He loves to follow him outside and has done fine with him. He will only eat his food on a plate or on the floor, but has learned to take treats nicely. He loves to bark "woo...woo ...woo" when he's excited (especially for food). I'm not sure how he would do on a leash as I have a fenced yard. On the colder nights, he will snuggle up to me after it settles down and I carry him outside in the mornings. He is confused with the new snow so we will be working on that. My adoption donation is $ 300 + Tax $ 20.63. All dogs are current on core vaccines, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested and on preventative, micro-chipped and if recommended by a Vet, have had a dental cleaning and other treatment to get and keep them healthy while in the rescue’s care. All dogs are living in foster homes and house manners, including potty training and any behavioral issues are being worked on. But we never say our dogs are 100% house- trained as when they transition to a new home there can be accidents while they adjust to a new environment and schedule. PNC Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit and any and all donations over and above the adoption donation are tax deductible. We have a large group of dogs in our Furever Foster program that acts as a foster based sanctuary for dogs not likely to be adopted. The rescue keeps these dogs healthy, comfortable and on necessary medications with necessary treatments for life.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
