Adoption Fee: $300 DOG'S DESCRIPTION Dottie is a very affectionate and sweet girl, but is a little timid and would do better in a suburban setting. She arrived along with her sister from a high-kill shelter and she was heartworm positive. She has since been treated and is fully ready for a forever home. We thought that Dottie won the lottery when she and her sister got adopted together, but while her sister adjusted well to very urban environment, Dottie was scared and overwhelmed of things like elevators and toddlers harassing her on busy sidewalks. She gets nervous in new situations and overwhelmed when crowded so she would do better as only dog and in a home with no small kids. Her new family decided to keep her sister, but sadly, Dottie was bounced back into our rescue where she is again patiently waiting for a home. She would be a great companion to a family with older kids or older person who wants a lap dog who will shower them with undying love and attention. Dottie knows that she has lots of strikes against her - she is older, she gets timid, and she will growl at other dogs when overwhelmed BUT she is also very good kisses, snuggler, lap sitter, guard dog and the most loyal and loving companion you can ever imagine. She is hoping that there is someone out there who will fall in love with her with all her flaws and offer her a forever home. Your new pet will require a refresher in house-training. K-9 Lifesavers strongly recommends all new adopters enroll their new pet into obedience training. This provides for an easier transition into a new home, ensures the dog remains well socialized, and helps form a bond between the dog and the new family. Adoption fees cover basic vetting, spay/neuter surgery (for dogs over 6 months old), rabies, distemper/parvo vaccinations, treatment for worms, heartworm testing, monthly heartworm prevention and monthly flea/tick prevention (while the animal is in our care), and transport costs from high-kill shelter. Please note that on average, K-9 Lifesavers spend significantly more on each dog than their adoption fee. Adoption fee for HW positive dog also covers heartworm treatment at our partner vets. Foster Program: Foster homes provide for the temporary care of a rescue until the dog is placed into a loving, forever home. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
