a 3-year-old beautiful boy who was surrendered to a West Virginia shelter, along with Einstein (a Pomeranian). Both boys were matted to the skin and had to be shaved at the shelter. They were left alone for over two months in a home alone after their owner was hospitalized with a terminal illness. The neighbor would feed the boys by opening the door and throwing food into the home. This had caused Albert to initially show food aggression which has improved with time, but would likely start again in a new environment until he is comfortable. To add to their trauma, an animal control officer used a catch pole to remove the boys from their home. We don't know how they were treated by the owner, but both were extremely fearful when they arrived and each day are coming out of their shells. Albert will only be available to a home with a stable, structured environment that cannot include children or senior citizens. It has taken a lot of time and patience, but Albert has become a momma's boy and even allows his foster dad to pet him. A fenced yard is also required as Albert is not leash trained and can become fear aggressive when a leash is attempted. Albert is taking daily Prozac and his demeanor has slowly been improving! He no longer hides as much, is exploring the yard more, and even barking at the squirrels. Albert is a commitment and will take lots of time and patience for him to come around, but ultimately he is a big baby that wants lots of attention once he settles in. He does prefer a female owner, but tolerates the men of the home. It has taken since his intake September 2018, but he does sniff the man of the home and allows a little petting here and there. Due to Albert's potential fear aggression he cannot be placed in a home with senior citizens or children. He really does need a quiet home with a structured routine to thrive. We would love to see Albert in a home of his own to grow and become the dog we know he can be. Albert and Einstein are not bonded and can be adopted separately. Albert weighs 24 pounds and is ready to move on from his past! He is neutered, current on vaccines, microchipped, and has been heartworm/lyme tested. You can follow his progress on our Facebook page or apply to adopt at PomPaws. Pawsitively Pom Rescue has a $250 adoption fee.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
