Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Meet Skipper. This sweet baby girl was relegated to the backyard by her owners to live as an outside dog. She was unspayed and had no prior vet care, so she was especially vulnerable. We found that She was in heat when we rescued her, and we are so thankful a concerned neighbor took action to get her into rescue. We were able to get her out of that situation quickly and avoid the prospect of another unwanted litter of puppies. Skipper has been in her foster home for almost two weeks, living with her foster mom, grandma, three dogs, and various pup clients who rotate in for doggy daycare during the week. She’s been great with all the other dogs, large and small, and does well as part of a pack. Skipper is a very playful and happy dog, and would do best with a dog buddy in her new home. She always wants to be near her pack. She’s quickly learning the rules of home life and knows to go potty in the yard. Skipper is still a young dog who needs consistent, regular breaks and praise when she’s successful. Her foster mom, Georgette, has been working on her leash and greeting skills and is seeing improvement. She loves going for walks and does pretty well on leash. She’s not much of a puller but will sometimes bark at a passing dog. She's improving with time and as she gets familiar with her neighborhood. In the home, she’s a bit vocal when people come in the door or walk down the streets — this will improve with more exposure and practice. She’s not a big fan of the crate but has no issue being left home alone and sleeps soundly through the night. As she settles in, Skipper is becoming very cuddly, especially with Grandma. She takes treats gently and is very patient, always waiting her turn for food. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 2/23/24 "Skipper's potty training is going well and she asked to go out for the first time…Woo Hoo! We also learned in the AM when we let her out she goes pee right away and tries to come back in but if you wait her out a little bit she will turn around after a little bit and go poop too. We've learned that she loves going for walks and is sitting out in the sun. She also likes collecting things such as PJs from our bed and socks from the closet to snuggle and lay on. She enjoys playing fetch with her favorite furry toy too. She’s a good-natured pup who will make some lucky family very happy." Skipper will be coming to the DC metro area on 3/2. Apply today!
