If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Hi everyone, my name is Friesian and I am the most adorable and playful puppy you could hope to meet. I have lots of puppy energy and I LOVE to play with my foster kitty sibling, but my doggy foster siblings are old and don't like to play. I would love to find an active family that loves to play and wants to take me home! Treeing Walker Coonhounds make exceptional family dogs for those with active lifestyles. This breed is valued by hunters for their focus and efficiency in the field and at home they have energy to spare and want to be included in all family activities. Treeing Walker Coonhounds enjoy children tremendously and will never turn down a romp in the yard. They get along well with other dogs, though the family cat could be in peril, as Coonhounds have strong chasing instincts. At the end of a day of hunting or playing, the Walker Coonhound will want to curl up on the couch for some affection and relaxation. They are easy to train, and make a fine family companion for both first time and experienced dog owners. Posted Breed: Pointer / Boxer / Mixed. Hi Everyone!! My name is Olivia and I'm new to this meeting people online thing but I hear it's a great way to meet a forever family! I'll be honest, I know I'm a dog but I have no idea what breed but people have predicted many things. Now for facts that I CAN tell you about myself - my favorite things in the world are playing and snuggling. I have made so many doggy friends that I love to play with whenever possible, however when I see my foster dad on the couch I jump up for some snuggles and snoozes. I'm only one or two years old and weigh around 40 pounds. The outdoors are another favorite thing! When the leash comes out I know it's time for a walk or potty break so I get really excited. My foster apartment also has a balcony that I enjoy sitting on and watching the kids play. Basically now that I think about it, I love almost everything in life (I'm even happy with the crate when I get a treat). All I need now for things to be truly perfect is a "furever home." If you want to add this sweet girl to your family please apply at hopeanimals.org today! Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued pet! Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Hi, my name is Meadow. I'm looking for a furever home. My foster mom says I've got the personality of a young pup but the soul of an old dog. I don't know what that means but I do love playing ball outside in the dog park, play-chasing other dogs (all the people in the park laugh and say that I'm just so much faster than all of the other dogs in there), and I think it's most fun when I can get my foster mom to play with me and run around (apparently I need a lot of exercise and so does she). I also love to cuddle up on the couch, in the bed, and on your lap. And I need pets constantly. If you're not using your hands to pet me, I'll be sure to pet YOU to let you know where your priority lies. My foster mom and I go on lots of long walks every day--sometimes slow and leisurely and other times we get to jog! Did I mention I love being outside? I need a home where you can let me out the door to play in a yard. My dream yard has lots of space and probably a fence--and it could even have little humans I could play with! I love those little things! My mom says I'm sweet and loving with people, I'm easily trainable and very well behaved and that I'll make such a good family dog. Please come see me at one of the events! I can't wait to meet you! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Widget is an empathic snuggle-bear who loves to cuddle. Her foster parents say she is an old soul because she is sensitive with well-developed social skills, but doesn't mind being alone at times. She'll happily thump her way over and curl up in your lap while looking at you with her gorgeous hazel eyes. You should see her when you turn on the TV! The way she titls her head while watching Netflix is the cutest thing. She is shy around other pups but is respectful of everyone she meets and loves playing once she gets comfortable. She has a blast chewing on a good bone, a stick found in the yard or her favorite toy of all, a tiny squeaky-stuffed fox. She's already overcome a lot in her short life. She was rescued at just three months old, suffering from malnourishment so severe that her legs couldn't support the weight of her frail body. All that is behind her now, though, and she just needs a loving forever family to show her how great the world can be! Widgie-Monster (as her foster parents lovingy refer to her) is current on vaccinations and preventatives, microchipped and will be spayed when old enough. She's pretty much got house-training down and is usually happy to sleep in her crate at the end of a long day. If you own your home or rent a bread-friendly property and are interested in adopting this amazing girl, please APPLY ONLINE at: https://www.petstablished.com/adoptio... and Widget's foster mom or dad will get in touch to tell you all about her. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. **Ozzie is now on Instagram! @ozziecanyouhearme The girl with the big, brown “look at me” eyes in this picture is Ozzie! Ozzie is a young girl, just shy of 2 years old; when animal control rescued her, she was pregnant, and gave birth to a litter of puppies in the shelter (where they were all adopted, while she was left waiting for a home of her own). Our director was drawn to her because of what we now refer to as her “pitiful Ozzie pose.” You see, Ozzie is very smart. She'll use her puppy dog eyes to make you think she's miserable; however, she's simply trying to win you over and hypnotize you with her big, almond-colored eyes! Ozzie loves humans – if anything, she loves them too much! Ozzie is persistent as she begs for pets and attention, and may need to be reminded how to greet folks (new and familiar) with an appropriate amount of enthusiasm. She is a smartie, though, and can act angelic when she gets the structure and stimulation she needs! Ozzie has learned a lot since her time in the shelter and is a changed woman. She knows to sit before being let outside, to stay by our side during walks, and, most importantly, when enough is enough. Because Ozzie is smart and sly, she will thrive most with an adopter who is willing to put time into building a relationship with her. Once you and Ozzie are on the same wavelength, you will love her. Ozzie will thrive in a home with an individual or family who is physically active and has the time to work her brain. She'd be a great "dog with a job," daily playmate, or running or hiking partner and would love to help you train for your next race, triathlon, etc. You can play games with her, work on obedience, teach her new tricks; just fifteen minutes of brain work leaves her happy and ready for a nap. If "making a viral YouTube video" is on your bucket list, Oz can help you check that off. She might be too energetic for a home with very young children right now, but loves interacting with kids and we think she would acclimate well to a home with young children as she gets a little older and slows down. Ozzie can get along with other dogs who don’t mind her enthusiasm, but may be a little territorial with strange new dogs coming into a home that she considers "hers." We routinely get great reports from her daycare and she loves playing and cuddling with her foster family’s dogs, but she'd go nuts whenever we had a new dog visit at home. This “friendly and social but territorial” behavior pattern is common in the black mouth cur breed, and if you google “black mouth cur mix” you will see several Ozzie lookalikes. Ozzie is so eager to find her match! Her adopter will also have a complimentary consult with her trainer, Angela, to learn about best practices for working with Miss Oz! Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Meet Kodi, a girl with a sweet, gentle, and funny personality. Kodi is such a happy dog and she'll always be doing something to make you laugh. She is fully trained to walk by your side, sit, down, stay, recall, and shake. Kodi gets so excited to bounce around outside and play with her foster dad. She loves to do sprints and recalls, but she's not a fan of long distance runs. Give Kodi a plush squeaky toy and you will make this girl even happier. She will carry it around and squeak it just for fun. Kodi currently lives with her foster family and her four-legged foster brother, Blu. Kodi does not mind being around Blu, but does not care for playing with dogs. She is very gentle natured and needs time and patience to gain trust within a calm environment. Kodi will need a home with no kids. This is because of the need to have behavior conscious interactions. She needs an experienced owner that will strongly advocate for her needs and give her the right guidance to keep her stress free. Give Kodi personal attention and patience and you will see what makes her so great to be around. I hope to find mine very soon! My foster parents have been calling me Nina and they say I’m a loveable two-year-old terrier mix and weigh around 50 pounds. I love playing with my foster parents and new fur-sisters. My foster sisters and I get along great. We share all kinds of cool toys and snuggle at night! They’ve been teaching me new tricks and they let me know that I’m a quick learner. My foster parents are always bragging about me and giving me compliments. This makes me super happy, because I have lots of love to give and I can’t stop smiling! Admittedly, I might be a little bit of a people-pleaser, but I’m also very independent. I love to be outside and occupy myself in my new fenced-in yard. But there’s a big world to explore so I’m polishing my leash skills. I would love to meet you. I’m a little shy around new people, but I know we’ll be friends in no time.
