Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $300. "Available for adoption is the sweetest 2-year old pitbull (about 47 lbs). Frankie loves to give affection, and we’d bet she’s the best snuggler in Philadelphia. She’s incredibly smart and willing to please her owners. Frankie was a stray who we found in Chester, PA. We brought her to the vet, who gave her the necessary shots, as well as a flea bath. Since then, she has been living with us and is so incredibly sweet. She was spayed in mid February and is now fully healed. Frankie is a true companion dog, who always looks to stay by your side and loves to be pet. She’s fully potty-trained and knows basic commands like sit exceptionally well. She’s well behaved around strangers but does not get along with other dogs. She's looking for a home with older children because of her strength and excitability. " Please email us at AlmostHome4Dogsyahoo to find out if Frankie is the right one for you! (Local adoptions preferred — Philadelphia and tri-state area [South Jersey and northern Delaware] only.) PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US! A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

    • Great Dane-Redbone Coonhound Mix Dog For Adoption in Doylestown, PA, USA

      Axel

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Great Dane-Redbone Coonhound Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Redbone Coonhound / Great Dane / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $300. Axel is a redbone coonhound mix, mixed with something large, perhaps a dane. Axel came to the shelter weighing 72 pounds, but he has put on a few pounds since then. Axel is about 10 years old and has spent every day of his life at the end of a chain! Every day, for ten long years, his master would come home to a friendly, waggy-tailed dog, pass him by as he entered the house, and never pay him any attention or take him for a walk or get him off the chain to play. The neighbors would sometimes go over to pet him or give him treats, and they felt so sorry for him, especially as time passed and he aged. Eventually, Axel stopped even greeting the master who ignored him as if he had finally accepted that his fate was sealed. The first time the humane officers allowed Axel to run freely in the fenced yard after they brought him to the shelter, he ran and ran and kicked up his heels and ran some more! Everyone was so happy for him to be able to run free at last. He needs a nice fenced yard wherever he goes! He may be 10 years old, but he is happy and energetic and has a lot of living to do. Who will give him the best years of his life? Here's an update from Axel's new foster mom after his first week here: I just want to tell you what we’ve learned about Axel. He is so sweet. He loves to be pet. He’ll take his head and push it under your hand if he wants attention. He cries when we put him in the crate at night but calms down and sleeps well. He’s only had two accidents and both were by the kitchen door. I think he tried to tell us he needed to go outside but got excited. He hasn’t gone in his crate at all. He has so much energy. We are trying to teach him to bring the ball back. He loves to chase it. He also tries to jump for it if you throw it in the air. He tears apart stuffed animals but he loves playing with them. We are trying to get him interested in a rope toy. We have trouble believing he’s 10 years old. He’s great with Lucy too. She’s not much of a player. I think if he was around a dog with more energy, he’d enjoy playing with them, He doesn’t pay her much attention unless she’s giving him a treat or throwing the ball. He takes treats very gently from everyone. After he gets all the attention he can, he lays down to nap. He loves love. If you start petting him, he leans against you. He’s a great companion. :-) Axel would do best in a home with older children as he doesn't understand his size :) Please stop by an upcoming Meet & Greet to find out if Axel is the right one for you! Here's her information from her family: Violet loves, loves to give lots of licks to everyone and is used to being kissed and pet by me/others. Violet was raised with my 10 year old male Bulldog mix who recently passed away. They played well with each other every day. Violet is amazing with adults and kids. She is about 50 lbs and can really eat despite her slender look! Riley is super soft, especially her ears and has a beautiful brindle coat. Beware of her tail - it's pretty fierce when she's excited! She loves treats, peanut butter filled Kongs, Nyla bones, obeying commands, nice walks, activities outdoors. She is great in the car too so take her along with you on your adventures! Riley is pretty chill and quiet but a good protector with her bark when strangers comes around. Riley can be an anxious dog with sudden sounds, strangers, and when children approach her. She gets along great with my male and female dogs, but her ideal companion would be a mellow guy who doesn't mind a little sister who steals his toys. Tortie rings the bells on the door when she has to go out, and she just loves to be in the yard (she's a great gardening buddy!), so a home with a physical fence would be ideal for her." "Best of all, Tortie is SO smart! She is very treat-motivated and quickly learns anything you want to teach her; she would love a family who will take her to classes to learn even more. She is crate-trained, but rarely needs to be in her crate anymore because she's so well-behaved. I have to admit, this is one foster dog that I would keep if I could — she's just that wonderful!" Now 5 years old and weighing in at 56 lbs., this happy, playful girl is spayed, microchipped and eager to meet her new family — could it be yours? Cindy is all eager smiles, tail wags and wiggly-jiggly dance moves when she sees folks coming her way along the kennel run. She tries so very hard to make sure you notice her — this super-friendly pup doesn't want to be lost in the crowd! And frankly, not only does this 9 year old charmer NOT get lost in the crowd, she's sure to stand out! Sporting a lovely deep brindle jacket and a broad, warm smile, sweet Cindy is a bubbly, engaging lady ready to steal your heart. She's always eager to climb into your lap or show off her oh-so-pettable belly as she rolls with delight in the grass. Here's what her temporary foster mom down south told us about her: "Cindy is absolutely loving with every human she's met. She's a little TOO interested in cats, however, so a cat-free home would be best for Cindy." Cindy's foster mom told us she's doing wonderfully there, too: "Cindy loves, loves, loves to be around people! She is a gentle, sweet girl who walks very nicely on the leash. Her idea of heaven would be a home where someone is around the house most of the day, as she's not fond of being crated or otherwise contained ... and she loves having 'people company' more than anything. She's an eager-to-please girl who is great with kids, housetrained, laid-back and mellow." Cindy is dog-selective. She's fine with the foster's other dog but has issues with some others so she would do best as an only dog. Want to learn more? Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: $300. Zeus and his brother Thor were picked up as strays in rural KY. They are well-mannered and in great condition so the shelter was sure their owner would show up but they were unable to find them. The boys are 2-3 years old and about 80 lbs each. Thor has found a home but Zeus is still looking for his new family. He is a sweet boy. He's a bit timid and does much better around other dogs so would love a home with a buddy. Please email us at AlmostHome4Dogsyahoo to find out if Zeus is the right one for you! (Local adoptions preferred — Philadelphia and tri-state area [South Jersey and northern Delaware] only.)
