I'm at the shelter, waiting for someone to want me. My name is Pongo. I'm 1 and weigh 45 lbs. You might think my story is sad, but I am feeling pretty good about life now! I used to live outside and I was neglected. I slept inside an old mattress. It was the only shelter I had. Then I was rescued. It's been scary, I admit that. It's hard to trust people. It's hard to be told what to do, when I all ever knew was how to be alone and take care of myself. I am very playful and I like to have fun. I'm very loving. But I need people to be respectful and understanding. Pay attention when I try to tell you something. I have been here since April. That's pretty sad, but at least I get fed and I have a bed and shelter! And only nice people talk to me now. Everyone is pretty nice, is turns out. I'm learning. Please help me get a home of my own. Pongo is hilarious! He's a comedian! He will give you years of entertainment and will be a best friend forever! Pongo. Fun to look at. Fun to be around. Fun. Pongo is a bit of a punk, though. He is a bit feisty, so we prefer a home with no children, but older and considerate kids would be alright. He has ignored cats in the office, but we would want to be cautious about a home with cats.

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
