Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Puma (GA) is a spayed female Shepherd mix rescued in Georgia. Puma is 2.5 years old as of Februry 2023. Puma was rescued as a young puppy from a life of neglect in a hoarding situation where Puma unfortunately learned very early in her life that in order to stay alive, she could not share resources. She has grown up to be a happy, sweet, loving pup, but she has not been able to shake her inability to share her food, toys or bones. To best manage that, Puma would do best in a home with considerate children who are old enough to respect Puma's need to protect her stuff. Puma loves people and dogs, but she would need a home experienced in resource guarding to give her the structure to appropriately interact with other dogs. Puma is an adorable girl who deserves to have a terrific life, and we know that her special person is out there. RDR's adoption fees include the cost of spay/neuter/microchip at an RDR-approved facility, whether completed before adoption or if deferred because the pet is too young or has a medical issue. Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
