Posted Breed: Shepherd / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Hi! I'm Mercedes. I'm an approximately 1 year old, female, Shepherd/Heeler mix who weighs 45 lbs. I was surrendered on 12/19/2023 because my owners could not continue to care for me. I love people of all ages! I am a very sweet girl who truly loves her people. I have lived with other dogs in the home and have made quite a few canine friends since I have been here at the shelter. Even though I get along with other dogs, a meet and greet is encouraged prior to adopting me to make sure we get along before taking me home. I walk great on a leash and RAC staff is confident that I am house broken. I really enjoy being around people and prefer to be with a human companion throughout the day. I am spayed, current on my rabies vaccination, basic boosters, microchipped, and heartworm negative! My adoption fee is $125. All animals, unless otherwise noted in their description, are at 1825 Airport Rd. in Rockwall, TX. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday 9 am to 6 pm and Saturdays 9 am to 5 pm. For questions, please call 972-771-7750 ext. 2 or email infoRockwallAdoptions. IMPORTANT NOTICE: All shelter animals are required by Texas state law to be spayed/neutered. RAC completes this procedure at the age of 12 weeks. If you are adopting a pet under the age of 12 weeks or an animal that has not yet been spayed or neutered, you will be required to return the pet to our facility on the agreed upon date set at the time of adoption. This policy is non-negotiable and violation of this health code is a criminal offense.

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
