Golden Retriever
Yellow Retriever
The Golden Retriever has a great personality and is easy to train, making this one of America's favorite family pets. They are good hunting companions and also great with kids.
Labrador Retriever
Labrador, Lab
The Labrador Retriever is probably America's favorite dog. He is playful (well into his adult years) and is often seen as a lifelong friend.
Havanese
Bichon Havanais, Havana Silk Dog, Bichon Havanese, Havaneser, Bichon Habanero
The Havanese is a small dog with lots of hair, including a tail that curls up over its back. It is affectionate and happy, making it a great family companion.
Portuguese Water Dog
Cão de Água Português, Cão de Água Algarvio
The Portuguese Water Dog is a very fun-loving breed. They do not shed, thus making them a low-maintenance breed. They're very playful and, as their name implies, they love to play in the water. Suitable for both city and country living.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Wheaten, Wheatie
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is great with children. They are also very good with strangers and other dogs, so they fit well with most families. The Wheaten learns fast and needs lots of daily exercise.
Cavapoo
The Cavapoo is a mix of the Cavalier King Charles and the Poodle. Both parent breeds like to be close to people, so this mix is best for families with time to spend with the dog.
Mutt
A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkie
The Yorkshire Terrier is a tiny dog, but this should not be confused with delicacy. They have a strong sense of self and prefer to be treated with respect and no pampering.
Coton de Tulear
The Coton de Tulear is very rare, but has gained popularity in the USA in recent years. This is a good, small companion dog.
Goldendoodle
The Goldendoodle is a mix between the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. This breed is a good choice for families.
Cavaton
The Cavaton is a cross between an Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Coton de Tulear. The Cavaton is a hybrid or designer breed that was developed by crossing Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Coton de Tulear. Though the breed was intended to be a 50/50 mix, many of the Cavaton are bred over many generations and may not always be 50% and 50%. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. We currently do not have more detailed information for this breed.
Shih Tzu
Chinese Lion Dog, Chrysanthemum Dog, Shih-Tzu
The Shih Tzu is a sweet and playful family companion. He's bolder than his small size suggests, but gets along well with strangers and other animals.
Bernese Mountain Dog
Berner Sennenhund, Bernese Cattle Dog
The Bernese Mountain Dog is sweet, but shy. Although he makes a great family pet, he often bonds to just one person in the family. If socialized early, he gets along well with other animals and children.
Pomeranian
Deutscher Spitz; Zwergspitz; Spitz nain; Spitz enano; Pom; Zwers
The Pomeranian is a very inquisitive dog. He's intelligent and trains well. Moreover, he's quite wary of strangers, so may serve as a great ' though tiny ' watch dog.
Bichon Frise
Bichon à poil frisé, Bichon Tenerife
The Bichon Frise is a cheerful little dog that gets along with everyone. They are active, alert, and very easy to train, making them an excellent family pet.
Zuchon
Shichon, teddy bear dog, fuzzy wuzzy puppy, Chacy Ranior
The Zuchon is a mixture of the Bichon Frise and the Shih Tzu. Both breeds make good companions.
Dachshund
teckel
The Dachshund (German for 'badger dog') is a family favorite. Playful, friendly, and full of charm, he makes a great pet.
