laugh and play around. Must have a great sense of humor and some time to spend with me. I’m on a mission to please you.” The phrase "A mighty heart" is the perfect description of Syracuse (or Sy, as he is fondly known). He is a remarkable, resilient dog who will be such a fun and devoted companion! This quote by Hercules also reminds us of Sy: "A true hero is not measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart". When he was a puppy, sweet Sy was was found alone on the side of the road after being hit by a car. He was taken to Metro Animal Care and Control where he had surgery and made a complete recovery. The staff took excellent care of Sy and the only reminder of that time is his tongue that is hangs slightly to the side. It makes Sy especially adorable looking! He lived at MACC for a year, then came to our shelter for a change of scene, hoping he would find his forever family. Sy is just over two years old and savors each and every moment! Handsome Sy is a people magnet, so he is the perfect wingman. He loves long walks and is housebroken and crate trained. He has a great time racing around the shelter yard. When he is done, he is ready to give doggy kisses and have lots of cuddles. He truly brightens our days! We are so proud of Syracuse - he represented our shelter at Miranda Lambert's MuttNation March! He also visited a local firehouse and has attended several offsite events. Sy was – and is – a star wherever he goes. Sy enjoys riding in the car and going just about anywhere – hiking, camping, errands – he’s game. Sy was trained by the excellent staff and Nashville K9 and loves showing off the commands he learned there! Sy is an ideal dog for an active family. Long walks and plenty of exercise are just what Sy needs! He would love to continue his obedience training, too. Due to his energy level, Sy would do best in a home with older children. Sy would be great as an only dog or with a canine companion his size. A meet and greet would be required to ensure compatibility. A relationship with Sy is one that is worth so much - he has come so far and is very resilient. If you are looking for an active dog who will be the very best of buddies, Sy could be the one! All the staff and volunteers dote on Sy and treasure the time we spend with him! You could not ask for a more loyal or fun companion! After being given a second chance at life, he has embraced it completely. Now all he needs is a family to love and care for him - could it be yours? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
