dog and has never had any issues. He typically does not get along with other large dominate dogs, especially males. Good with cats?unknown, will not be adopted to a home with a cat Good with children?OK for kids over: 10 Activity Preference:Low maintenance overall but needs quality outside time. IQ:Smart Jax's favorite things:I love to go for walks, play ball, meet people and most of all play Hide-and-Seek! Jax is good at:meeting people, behaving in the house, going for car rides, making me feel safe, walking on a leash, cuddling, playing, catching balls/frisbee, following commands Ideal home:a fenced yard, other: No small children Training Needs:socialization with dogs Health issues:I do not have any health issues. I have consistently been to the vet and have been fed a grain free fished based protein food my entire life. Meet Jax I am a great companion for anyone with older kids or without kids! I love to play with humans more than anything else! I spend most of the day sleeping in a sunny spot either inside or outside but prefer to be inside. I was once crate trained but have since graduated and roam the house when my family is not home. I do not have accidents or chew on items I should not. A walk or some time playing with my owners in the yard is all I need to get my energy out for the day. A mile will wear me out for the night. One of my favorite games is hide-and-seek! Just tell me to stay, go hide and I will try and find you! I also am very good for a big dog at catching balls in the air. I am only ok at fetch as sometimes I like when you chase me! I do well in the car, I sit back and enjoy the ride. I love to go to the park and find new scents. Afterwards I may get a bath. I don’t enjoy them, but I do enjoy being clean. Being a good companion is important to me. I am very connected to my owners and listen very well. I sit, stay, come, lay down and can “leave it” when my owners instruct me too. When it is time to calm down I notice and sit or lay next to my owner. Being close and showing affection is important to me! When I am not showing affection, I will sit next to my owners and chew on a bone. When it is time for bed I follow my owners to my dog bed in the master bedroom. Listening is very important to me. When my owners have a party, I make sure I am a good host! I am not intimidated by a crowd at all and excel when there are a lot of people around to play with. I know it is important to be a good host, so I make sure I do not get into anything I am not supposed to! Even when my owners place a tray of meat and cheese on the ottoman at my eye level I will not take any food! I may sit and stare at it and since I made some many friends during the party someone will sneak me a treat! I do not jump on people, I do not chew on furniture or anything I am not supposed to and I do not have accidents in the house. Even when left unattended I am well behaved. To be considered for adoption, you must apply using our free, online application. Our dogs are fostered in our volunteers' homes, not in a central shelter/location. Only approved applicants are put into contact with the foster family to setup a meeting with the foster dog. Visit our Adoption Policies web page for more information and a link to our application: americanbulldogrescue/adoption-policies/.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
