oing to a trainer for evaluation and help resolving any issues and see what types of dogs he is best compatible with. Good with cats? unknown, will not be adopted to a home with a cat Good with children? unknown, will not be adopted to a home with kids under 10 Activity Preference: Needs a couple walks a day., Low maintenance overall but needs quality outside time., Will go with the flow IQ: Smart Sparky's favorite things: Sparky loves his kong, and any other toy that he sees. He also loves treats for training and will learn whatever you want him to if there are treats involved. He is just now starting to learn how great belly rubs are as well. Sparky has also learned that walks are great fun, and there are so many smells to learn! Sparky does very well in the car, he sits down and enjoys back seat driving. Sparky is also a perfect gentleman meeting new human friends! Sparky is good at: meeting people, behaving in the house, going for car rides, making me feel safe, walking on a leash, cuddling, playing, following commands Ideal home: someone at home most of the day, a fenced yard, Lots of exercise opportunities, other: Someone that has the time to work on his finishing touches. Training Needs: socialization with dogs, needs obedience training, other: Finishing school Health issues: None known at this time as we are still figuring out all his needs. He may have either food or seasonal allergies as well. Meet Sparky Sparky has transformed into an amazing, handsome dog. He came to us practically on his death bed being starved in a crate in an empty parking lot in DC. He has gained nearly 45 pounds and is healthy and happy and still learning how to be a dog again. He is up to 90 pounds however he will gain most likely another 15-20 pounds to his full weight. When he first arrived to us his age was unknown, anywhere from a puppy to 7 years old. Now that he feels better and is healthy, he shows more signs of a younger dog. He has learned basic commands and picked up our household routine very quickly. He will do anything for a treat! He is a handsome boy and gets comments when he takes walks. Sparky also loves toys and has gotten quite good at playing fetch at the park. He is a well behaved dog, that likes to play or just lay down near you. Sparky does have a issue with socks. He has had issues with eating socks off of the ground, and although he doesn't show too many signs of this issue now, he still needs monitored so he doesn't try to eat one again (He also likes fabric). Sparky does love a good car ride, especially when it means he is going for a hike. Sparky is best on leash due to some re-activeness to other dogs. For the most part, he is getting along nicely with his foster canine sibling, but has been reactive to a few other dogs that he has met. He shows no signs of resource guarding with food or toys with humans, although not with his foster brother. He has no issue with you checking out his teeth. He is ok with bath time, it's not his favorite but he isn't terrible when the time comes. He also tolerates nail trimming well. He does very well in his X-pen at night and is learning that his crate is a safe place and isn't a bad place after all. He is on Prozac for some anxiety issues, but he is getting better everyday now that he understands what a good life is. We are positive that when he gets settled in his new home he should be able to no longer need Prozac. All in all, Sparky is a great boy who wants to please you and be there for you no matter what. He wants someone that is home more than they are gone, that has the time and patience to work on teaching him manners and how to just be a dog. Training either in the home or a group would be terrific for Sparky. He's basically like a gigantic puppy. He's had no home, no one to love him and teach him. He needs to continue with the basics as well as the advanced training. With a little time, patience and love Sparky will be that dog that people say was the "one" "the best dog ever". 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
