I'm around 1, weigh in at 46 pounds, and adore cuddling. Look at the photo of me on my back - pure lazy clown. Then I was riding with my foster and put my head on her shoulder and fell asleep! Talk about laid back and you got it right - ME AGAIN. I was surrendered to the kill shelter, just a throw away junk yard dog but boy has my personality come out since I was saved from execution and am living the life of Riley with my fosters. Just look at my photos? What more can I saw except that I'm pretty terrific. I don't have to have a fenced yard but I surely do need good walks and exercise. According to my foster here is what she thinks: I picked up Amos this morning and he is doing very well with us so far. The officer handed him over to me and he did not seem to have any concerns. He came straight to me and licked my fingers before I had an opportunity to properly offer my hand for his inspection. He is very mellow. He seemed very comfortable riding home in the car for the 1.5 hour duration. He does not have basic manners as it seems no one has bothered to teacher him (he was a "junkyard" dog and owner surrender); but, after one night, he seems to understand an "off" command and seems very eager to please. We slowly introduced him to our 1-year-old puppy at a distance and they gradually worked closer to one another over the evening and they are already lying together with no issues, although we will continue to be vigilant. He is submissive to our puppy, rolling on his back, as well. Our puppy snipped at him once because he surprised her from behind and he just seemed confused as to why she snipped at him. He showed no signs of aggression. He is very affectionate and seems to soak up belly rubs and scratches. He did not like getting a bath, but he relented with some modifications and coaxing. He showed no signs of aggression throughout the process even though he did not like it. I also sat about two feet from him while he ate and he wagged his tail the entire time. So far, he shows no food-aggression with humans. I cannot say yet if he does with dogs, but he seems overall submissive to our puppy. I think he will find a new home with no problems. He seems as though he is going to be a very loving companion. Because of his affectionate mannerisms and viewing the photographs, Amos has high potential as an Emotional Support Animal. Emotional Support Animals (ESA) Emotional Support Animals are not required to undergo specialized training. They can be dogs, cats, exotics, birds. Their primary role is to provide their owners with emotional comfort. Emotional support animals can benefit a disabled individual psychologically. The basic gift of companionship and unconditional affection can be the therapy needed to counter a condition like debilitating depression or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. ESAs are protected under the Fair Housing Amendments Act (FHAA) and the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). People meeting the proper criteria are entitled to an ESA to assist them with life. The FHAA protects individuals by allowing ESAs to live with them regardless of breed (even with no pet policies). The ACAA protects individuals by allowing ESAs to fly with them in the cabin of an airplane without having to pay additional fees. ESAs are not required to be professionally trained. An owner can train the pet. However a letter of need written by a mental health counselor will be required. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
