ife! She is nothing but love, and always eager to please her humans. Maddie is a younger dog, only 3 years of age and has spent her entire life in rescue, waiting for a home. We cannot even begin to fathom why, because she is a wonderful dog! Maddie adores her people, and makes it easy to go out in public amongst the crowd. She enjoys meeting new people and gets along with everyone! She makes it easy to return the love because she is happy to lay at your feet, or give you a hug with tons of kisses! We put her energy level at moderate because though she is a highly active dog, she is not overly hyper. She can definitely handle any outdoor activity you seek to spend with this girl. Whether it be hiking, biking, even swimming. This girl loves to be outdoors, and as you can see is happy to be playing with her friends! She is energetic, and is usually one of the ones to lead the playtime when her and her pack are out to play. She LOVES toys, and enjoys chasing the water hose. When the heat gets going, maddie enjoys getting wet to cool down! Maddie is 100% housebroken, and there's no need for worry about the furniture or rugs! She is well behaved, and since she is so eager to please(especially with a tasty treat for motivation) she will happily respond when given commands. She has been working on her basic obedience. Maddie knows sit, come, stay, an go to crate. If she is being rowdy, a simple 'No Ma'am' takes the edge down, and this girl is waiting for your next command. She is easy to work with, so continued training will be simple and sweet; something fun for all of the family to enjoy together! Maddie is crate trained, housebroken, and leash trained! Maddie just gets excited and wants to greet everyone, so don't be surprised if she jumps up to give a kiss! This sweet girl is 100% ready to go on the medical side of things as she is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped and on monthly flea/HW preventions. Please contact app@aarfhouston.org for more information about this dog. You can apply online at www.aarfhouston.org/forms . Once your application is approved, we will schedule a meet and greet. Thank you for considering a rescue! The adoption fee includes vet check, vaccinations, Bordetella, de-worming, rabies, spay/neuter and microchip. There is a an additional $12.99 fee for Home Again for a lifetime registration of the microchip. It is against the law in the State of Texas for a rescue not to be sterilized so we have to make sure it gets completed and that we have record of it. NOTE: In our bios, we provide information based on our volunteer's experience with a particular dog; such as temperament, training, and ability to get along with others. AARF is a 501(c)3 Non Profit, all breed, no kill organization. Our group is always in need of donations in order to continue to give the needed medical care to our rescues. Adoption fees do not begin to cover all of the medical costs. Any donation, no matter how small is a big help and is greatly appreciated. Please help us to continue to help them. Thank you.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
