ow his background, but we do know that he is very sweet and has a nice calm demeanor. He loves to lean against your legs, get his back rubbed and is very affectionate. Snow is ready for someone to show him true love and guaranteed you will get all that love right back. Snow is all white with the most beautiful yellow/green eyes that just melt your heart when he looks at you. As far as we've seen he is good with other dogs and even cats, although he might try to play with them. He has quickly become a favorite here at PRBJ and is great with our staff and young volunteers. JANUARY 2017 Dog 4 a Day Update I took Snow out on Sunday for a few hours and explored downtown Sanford. I just wanted to pass along a few pictures from the day and my experience with him. He was such a sweetheart! If I were looking to adopt he would be the one for me! He loved sitting on our laps in the car and cuddling on the park bench by the water. He was a little hesitant getting in the car and I noticed loud noises made him a little nervous but he just needs more exposure to the world. He definitely made my day and I will be back soon to take him on another adventure! January 25, 2017 Volunteer Update I visited the center today and took Snow out for a nice long walk. As soon as he saw me looking at him through the window on the door to the kennel area he started wagging his tail so hard that his whole back end was moving back and forth! When I opened his kennel door he came to me but just sat there and let me pet him while I put a leash on him - he didn't try to rush out of the kennel or push past me to get out. For the most part Snow has very good leash manners - ocasionally on our walk he would get a whiff of something that interested him and would pull a little, but for the most part he kept my pace and stayed next to me. He LOVES people so we stopped to meet a couple folks along the way and he just calmly sat down to be petted and even leaned against their legs, just looking for love. He would make a good walking/jogging partner as he doesn't stop to sniff things every few feet like some dogs do. Snow is so calm and loving. I have been volunteering for PRBJ for 8 years and have seen hundreds of dogs come and go and can honestly say that Snow is TRULY SPECIAL and is one of a kind. My husband has a two-dog limit at our house, otherwise I would adopt Snow in a heartbeat. He is going to make someone an absolutely amazing companion and would be a great dog for a family with kids because of his calm, gentle demeanor. All he wants is love and affection and he will give plenty in return. Come meet Snow in person and consider taking him out as part of our Dog for a Day program or even fostering him. You'll soon love him as much as everyone else does!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
