ith other dogs and adults, though he may take a few days to settle in with you and show his true, sweet personality. He would prefer a quieter home, as he is used to living with a single owner. He is very good on a leash and thoroughly enjoys going on long walks and visiting with other dogs and people in the neighborhood. He is a perfect companion dog for a senior adult or couple. Bogie came to us quite a bit overweight, and has so far lost 6 pounds on his weight loss journey. He needs to lose at least another 5 or 6 pounds, so he requires an owner committed to daily exercise, a controlled weight-loss prescription diet, and measured portions. He will try to tempt you with his pleading brown eyes to feed him anything you are eating, but you must remain strong! Bogie REALLY loves his food and wants to protect his food bowl, often a little too aggressively. His food bowl needs to be placed in a quiet, out of the way location, away from people and household traffic – and because of this, we also recommend he not go into a home with any children or visiting grandkids. Bogie is being fostered in Kissimmee, FL. We typically try to adopt within 3 or 4 hours of the foster home and require a home visit and meet and greet before an adoption is approved. Please email dyan@eskierescuers.org if you have any questions about Bogie. If you think you are his perfect forever home and wish to adopt him, please complete our online adoption application on our website: www.eskierescuers.org. Whenever possible Eskie Rescuers United tries to adopt out its dogs locally (or at least to adopters in adjoining states to where I'm being fostered). Please note that ERU processes LOCAL adoption applications before considering those from out of state. If I'm not local to you, as explained above, and you really have your heart set on me, you will have to make special arrangements so ERU can get me to you safely (for example, flying me to you at your own expense, or paying a transport group to drive me to you). Note: We may ask that you to make a donation to cover transport costs if the distance is great and we have trouble finding transport drivers. There is an adoption fee required; and, please be aware, Eskie Rescuers United will not adopt out its dogs as outdoor dogs. Eskie Rescuers United American Eskimo Dog Rescue, Inc. is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
