g this snow stuff! I definitely loved running outside, chasing sticks and smelling smells before, but the snow makes it even more fun to be out and about! And when it just gets too cold to stay outside any longer, I love to cuddle up inside with a good bone and my foster fur brother and foster parents. In fact, snuggling up or playing with my foster fur brother is one of my favorite things. He's a few years older than me though, and sometimes I think I annoy him because I've got a lot of energy. He's certainly helping me learn how to respect boundaries for dogs of all ages, but I bet I'd especially love a home with dogs closer to my age and/or energy level. Even though I think human babies are awesome, my foster parents think I would do best in a home with older kids - I'm just a little pup and boy oh boy, do I love chewing on all the things, including human fingers and toes! I'm working really hard to only chew on appropriate stuff, but sometimes I forget and start to chew on hands or furniture...I'm really good at going back to my toys when someone reminds me though! I'm working really hard on my chewing, but guys, I'm really proud of myself because I just learned the command "sit"! I love learning new things, it's really fun and I'm pretty good at it! I'm potty-trained too - I even know how to wait by the door to tell everyone I need to go out. Of course, I'm really little so I might still potty inside, but everyone has accidents every now and again, right? I’ve never have an accident in my kennel though. I sleep through the night in there and am getting used to spending a few hours during the day in my kennel too. I don't remember much about my life before my foster parents, but sometimes I get nervous when other dogs come near me when I'm eating or playing with a toy I really like. Maybe other dogs tried to take these things from me in the past?? I just don't know, but I DO know I need to find forever parents who will commit to helping me be less afraid in these situations. My foster parents and fur brother are helping me with it now, but I think it'll take a little bit of time until I'm totally over it. I love giving kisses, sharing cuddles, and spending time outside too. Really, I'll be happy doing whatever my forever parents want, whether it's snuggling on the couch, going for a walk downtown, or running along some woodsy trails! Whatever the activity is, I just can't wait to start spending time with my forever family! Rocky is sponsored by Elizabeth Kibler as a gift to Matt Guest. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
