la BW: Bella, how would you describe yourself? B: 50 pounds of awesome sauce! AKA FEMALE Pitbull mixed with a sharpie….ooops dang autocorrect, not a sharpie like the marker a Shar-pei like the wrinkled dog. I am ruffly about 10 months old. It is nice to be blue gray and white again. For a minute I was blue gray and pink, which is totally cool if you are decorating a nursery, but pink is not okay for skin. Now my skin is better and my white fur grew back, check out my before and after. See those pink toes and chest….ouch, I was itchy. BW: What are your likes/dislikes and do you have any special skills? B: I LOVE chewing on things. Despite my size, I’m still a pup and need stimulation. Walks/runs and a big yard to play in would help cur-tail my chewing. I am crate trained, potty trained, and know how to “sit” and am very patient at feeding time. BW: How do you get along with others? B: I love the other dogs in my foster home, but I kinda don’t trust those I meet out in public at first. I love my people, am curious about cats (I haven’t had much interaction with them). Foster Mom says I “get a little mouthy” and too excited when I meet people including little kids. Since I cannot dial down my rambunctiousness for little ones, you would need to plan to train me to be calmer if you have small kids. BW: Where did you come from? B: Alls I remember is Foster Mom breaking me outta ACS. I was in really bad shape with a gunky green hurt eye and basically bald and pink due to “mange”. As you can see, I’m all better now. BW: Anything else you’d like to add? B: 1,000% love-a-bull, hug-a-bull and cuddle-a-bull. Plus I am sweet and devoted. Oh, I also really love my toys. They keep me occupied and I have learned that they help me with my chewing issues. Also, when I get excited I can get a little “jumpy”, it’s just my way of showing how excited I am to see you. I’m sure with some training I can be the best good girl you’ve ever had. Sooooowho wants me? I'm available through AdoptionsGodsdogsrescue. Email them and tell them you want ME!!! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
