directly into your lap and ask for love. She is gentle and respectful and responds very well to commands such as ‘drop it’, or ‘ leave it’. She also knows how to sit on command. Has absolutely no problem with her mouth, nose, ears, or feet being touched. She seems to be a quiet dog. The entire week I had her she did not bark a single time, she only ever made noises of content or while playing and occasionally would whine softly when she was distressed. She did very well in the car after a little bit of help/reassurance getting in and enjoys chewing and playing tug o war. She doesn't quite understand how to use toys but she is very intelligent and learns quickly. She enjoys nibbling but does so gently and stops if you tell her to. Juniper appears to be housebroken and will hold it until she is taken outside. When you bring her out to go potty she is very efficient and will pee once when she first gets outside and will go #2 if needed after a little walking. She can be strong on leash when she is excited or scared, but is otherwise really well mannered and gentle. Has shown interest in chasing small animals (squirrels, rabbits, my cat), I believe this is solely done out of a desire to play. She met my cat and was very respectful, she essentially ignored her and showed no interest until my cat got startled and ran. She is very interested in other dogs and would likely benefit from a playmate. She met a very old and tiny dog and was incredibly excited and wanting to play. Considering the other dog’s size and age I held her back so she wouldn’t accidentally knock it over with her happy jumps, but she did give it kisses on its face > - A little timid of new noises and wants to be close to her person > - Gentle on leash > - Takes treats gently > - Enjoys being petted/body rubs/scratches > - Enjoyed sniffing on the trails > - Positive body language when sniffing other dogs through fence *Loved this girl - so happy, loved just being with someone *Quiet personality and easy going on the leash *Preferred walking to play yard today *Loved to stop as we walked to get some lovin! *She's a wonderful pup - perfect size too

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
