use Trained: Yes Crate Trained: Yes Energy level: Moderate History: Pulled from an animal control Adoption Fee: $350.00 From the Foster: Hi! I’m Ira and my foster says I am such a sweetie pie! But I’ve been waiting kind of a long time to find my forever home and my foster suggested maybe I needed to toot my own horn a bit! So what can I tell you? I love people…my people, new people, I love ‘em all! And I want to do whatever my people want to do. You want couch buddy to snuggle with? I’m your guy! Baseball games or HGTV, doesn’t matter what’s on, I’m just happy to hang out with you! Or if you are the more active type, going out for a nice 5k run…I’d love to be your jogging buddy! To quote the Littlest Mermaid, I just want to be where my people are! I like my crate…it’s a nice cozy place to hang out. And I absolutely know where I am supposed to do my ‘business’…and that is outdoors only! I know my basic commands, but it would be really cool if I could learn some new stuff too! I get along with other dogs as long as I get a chance to meet them slowly and they aren’t too pushy. I get nervous around pushy dogs and will react to them poorly but I've always lived with other dogs and do like friends once I get a chance to know them! I’m not really a fan of cats…I bark and that seems to do the trick scaring them away. I am also not a fan of the vacuum cleaner, but so far barking hasn’t made it go away. My foster says cats and vacuums are the only things I bark at though, which I gather is pretty good, at least compared to some dogs! So if you’re looking for a handsome, loyal, loving pup to share you couch or your run, come meet me and see if I could be the one for you! I was treated for heartworms a while ago, and feel so much better now, too! Let SHH know if you have any questions about that.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
