Foster Home Feedback * No Cats 6/5/17: What to say about Gidget? Her nickname is GoGoGidget, and that about sums her up! She is a very friendly and active young dog (approx. 1-year-old) who was forced to be an adult this past February when she gave birth to twelve puppies. Sadly 4 passed away within the first few days, but she successfully raised the remaining 8 puppies and is ready to put motherhood behind her and just be the happy-go-lucky carefree dog that she is. Gidget is totally potty trained, kennels really well with the exception of a few protests right away (she is pretty vocal though when she protests so an apartment setting is not recommended for her), she's amaaaazing with humans and other dogs (although she has no clue she weighs 52 pounds so a home with young kids is not a good idea for her- she would unintentionally knock the wind out of them with her bull-dozer ways.). Gidget also loves cats a little too much, so unless you have a rock-solid dog-proof cat who looooooves to play with other dogs, she probably shouldn't go to a home with cats. However, after two weeks with our cats, she is making some progress at resisting the urge to chase them and play with them, so if a family is up for the commitment of doing SLOW introductions to their cats, we would possibly consider a forever home that has cats. Gidget is a very active dog who would LOVE to find a home with another dog buddy and a fenced in yard to run her crazy zoomies in. She would love to find a very active family who can take her on daily walks, runs, and adventures as well as take her to obedience classes so she can learn how to be a well-mannered dog. Gidget is currently learning to sit at the door before we open it to go outside and sit for her treats and meals. Gidget's also learning the command "down", and is even getting better at walking on leash with a harness. She takes treats ever-so-gently! Gidget is such an amazing dog with the biggest personality and ears you will ever meet. Please consider adopting this young girl. I can 100% guarantee you that your life will be full of laughter and love. To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: www.4luvofdog.org

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
