FOSTER HOME NEEDED Statistics Name: Ronnie Breed: Pit Bull Terrier Age: 2.5 Years Size: Medium 51 lbs. ~Medium range: 26 - 60 lbs Adoption Donation: $75 (applicable sales tax included). Foster Home Feedback * NO other pets, No children, Fenced-in yard required 7/6/18: Every day, I’m more impressed by this girl. When Ronnie came to live with us, she was afraid of her own shadow. She would flinch and feel the need to protect herself at the smallest unexpected movement and every novel sound (like leaves blowing in the wind). Fast forward - she’s no longer afraid of the wind, but can still be fearful around new people, especially new men. Today, we had some furniture delivered. I was all worked up, worrying about how she would react to two strange men in her house. Would I traumatize her all over again? Would this set her back to square one? I put her in her kennel and stood nearby with the ever-heroic cheese snacks. Ronnie whined a little when they first came in. I gave her a treat every time she looked at the men, and she decided they were okay after about 5 seconds. She laid down in her kennel and just watched, happily accepting cheese treats while the men worked. This girl is going to make some lucky person very happy. If you think you might be a good fit, we’d love to meet you! 6/10/18 Volunteer Feedback: Little Ronnie loves the sunshine! She would be an excellent gardening buddy. Ronnie most enjoys hanging out in the yard while we do our yard work. She’ll come over to see what we’re doing, then saunter over to the warmest, sunniest spot to lounge. I recently took Ronnie on a trip to Buffalo River State Park. I thought we were going to go for a hike, but Ronnie just wanted to lay in the sun and watch the squirrels and rabbits from a distance. She handled seeing another dog quite well, as we made sure to keep a healthy distance away. She’s getting very good at staying calm around other animals, as long as there is enough space for her to feel safe. It’s been such a joy to see this scared little girl blossom into an excellent companion. She doesn’t need an extremely active home. She loves to go for slow, sniffy walks; she prefers a nice big soccer field to sidewalks. Even more, Ronnie loves to snuggle with her people on the couch. She would probably snuggle all day if she could. It will be so hard to let this one go, but we know that her perfect home is out there. If you think you could be a good fit, we’d love to meet you! 3/11/18 Volunteer Feedback: Ronnie and I took advantage of the warmer weather and went for a hike out at Buffalo River State Park. She was a great listener even when we saw wildlife. When we got home, she thought a good long snuggle-nap was in order. 2/22/17: If you’re looking for a dog to love you, and I mean REALLY love you, look no further. Ronnie loves her people, there is no doubt about that. She recently stayed in boarding for a few days, and when I picked her up she was so excited, she didn’t know what to do with herself. She couldn’t decide if she wanted to stay by my side for petting or go to the car to go home. I agree, Ronnie, these are the tough questions. When she finally decided to get in the car, she rested her chin on my shoulder the whole ride home. This dog has oodles of life to give! 2/10/18: After 6 months in our home, we are in love with this little nugget. She’s learning some fun tricks like jump and spin, play dead and roll over. She is such a fun dog to have around. We really wish we could keep her, but we want to keep our home open to more dogs in need. We know there is a perfect home out there for Ronnie, and we are excited to meet those people. 12/11/17: Ronnie has grown into such a happy girl, despite all of the pain she's no doubt endured. It is so wonderful to see these positive changes happening. At first, Ronnie was not happy about using a kennel. Luckily, she has figured out that her kennel is a safe space, all just for her. If she wants to chew on a bone that is out in the living room, she will pick it and run (very enthusiastically) into her kennel to enjoy her bounty. Ronnie was initially an exuberant leash-puller; with some training and a walking harness, she has turned into the splendid walking partner. Ronnie is going to be an absolutely perfect companion for the right person, and we are so excited to meet you, whoever you are! 11/6/17: SO MANY CUDDLES! This dog is a perfect friend for those who dislike the cold. She prefers the warmth of indoors to long romps in the snow. Since the weather turned, Ronnie and I have spent many hours lounging by the fire, sewing, and baking cookies. Every time I let her out of her kennel, she does this adorable slow, happy lolloping run through the house, and it makes me want to squish her face so much! We still have no accidents in the house, she's doing great in her kennel, and Ronnie is really honing her leash skills. 10/12/17: Ronnie is an amazing dog. So incredibly loving and sweet and cuddly and awesome. All this dog wants in life is to be with her people. We don't have any bathroom problems in the house; she does well in the kennel (after she settled into her heavy duty kennel), and she walks nicely on a leash. Ronnie's a great size - not too big, not too small. She rides nicely in the car, and we've been working on a little bit of anxiety when she's left alone in the car for brief periods of time. She's doing really well. When we first started, we couldn't even leave her alone in the car to run into the house to grab something we forgot. Last weekend, I was able to run in to the grocery store for coffee beans, and she did great. I'll continue to take her for very short trips to build her confidence. Oh, and Ronnie's seriously adorable. She's so cute that people have pulled their cars over to talk to us while we're walking in the neighborhood. So if anyone is looking for dog that can help them get a date, Ronnie would be perfect. 8/13/17 Volunteer Feedback: Ronnie had a kennel break at our house. She very interested in laying on the couch! She had 2 poop accidents but that was it. Otherwise did all her business outside. Ronnie doesn't love the kennel and will need a little work in this department. I was able to leave her in a metal kennel for roughly 25 minutes and although she was anxious, she did not bust out of it. Ronnie will need some positive reinforcements with the kennel. I think it wouldn't take her long to be comfortable in one. She is a lover and loves her people!! Ronnie is very content just hanging out with her family. She would be a pretty easy dog to have around once her fear of the kennel is relieved. And she is as cute as a button!! 8/12/17: Ronnie is a sweet lady who finds the world a little scary at times. Men especially can scare her, but with patience, she realizes they are friends. Ronnie will need a home who understands and can help her overcome her fears. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
