it Bull Mix (MANY PUPPIES IN RESCUE DO NOT HAVE PARENTS SO THEIR BREED IS UNKNOWN) TEMPERAMENT: Playful and mischievous, shy, nervous of strangers, lvoing ESTIMATED WEIGHT: 50ish lbs HOUSE TRAINING: Good. He is great on a consistent schedule. CRATE TRAINING: Good. He is crate trained. He eats and sleeps in his crate. OTHER DOGS: Good! Carter requires another dog in his home. He will need continued socialization and does best with a mentor who can help him with his initial shyness with people. CATS: Continued socialization will be important. CHILDREN: Dog-respectful children, 16 and older ADOPTION DONATION: $600.00 HEALTH: CARTER BURKE is healthy! He is altered, microchipped, flea treated, and dewormed. Your adoption donation goes toward the cost of this vet care as well as transportation and general care costs. HISTORY: Carter Burke was attacked by his mother as a baby and has some scarring on his head from that, but no lasting health issues. NOTES FROM FOSTER HOME: CARTER came to us as a very nervous puppy. He is doing well with his socialization. He can be leery of srangers initially but has excelled in his training with other people in classes. Because of this he would need to be in an adult-only home, as children can be unpredictable and he needs stability and consistency. He's a very loving boy who enjoys the company of other dogs. He is dog social and people social if people take the patience to earn his trust, which he learns quickly with treats and the bonding of training. He's the perfect little snuggle buddy. He doesn't require a lot of exercise but he is no couch potato either. He loves to train and be with his people. He's affectionate and silly. Small and athletic. We call him a little tank because he's quite muscular yet slim. He has an athletic build and would be a great jogging buddy. All dogs adopted from Motley Zoo come with a leash and either a Martingale collar or a harness, depending on each dog's particular needs. Welcome to Motley Zoo Animal Rescue. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization that is run by volunteers. Motley Zoo does not have a brick and mortar shelter location. Instead, all our rescue animals are cared for in private foster homes where the animals receive one-on-one care and attention in a home environment until permanent placement is found. Please email adoptmotleyzoo and request an adoption application and we will work toward approving you as an adopter with our rescue so that we can set a time for you to meet! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
