ndoned or neglected as an outside dog. Shelby is an "itty bitty Pitty" or a "Pocket Pitty" as she is a little thing at only 33 pounds & about a foot tall. She is estimated to be between 8-12 months of age. I took her in as a foster and she quickly adapted to life as a spoiled doggy. She gained a few healthy pounds and received veterinary care. She is up to date on shots & scheduled to be spayed on July 18th. She also received training by a highly qualified dog trainer. She now knows plenty of commands and how to walk nicely on a leash. She is a great listener and very eager to please Shelby is affectionate and loves to be right by your side. She is content with sitting on the couch with you or going for walks. It doesn't matter what you're doing as long as she can do it with you. She is very quiet, sometimes I forget she is there because she never barks! The only time she ever barks is if there is a knock at the door! Shelby loves animals, and normally ignores outside critters entirely however because of her upbringing, she has severe resource guarding issues towards other pets. She would thrive in a home with NO other pets. Shelby ABSOLUTELY LOVES humans. She has no aggressive tendencies towards humans at all. She is very docile & cooperative around people. She isn't a high energy dog, but does enjoy walks occasionally and grazing outside. Shelby is about a 5 on an energy scale from 1-10. She loves chewing on bones and squeaky balls. She is a heavy chewer so soft toys don't stand a chance. She is mostly housebroken, but can still use some more training. Shelby is the perfect dog all around. She is adorable, sweet, loyal, and deserving of a forever home. She has gone through a rough beginning and still is such a sweetheart (also bonus she has a heart shaped spot on her left shoulder!) Shelby is NOT with Eleventh Hour Rescue but we are helping to network her for her caretakers. If you would like to meet Shelby, please contact Diona at diona.scalaaol or 973 809 8962 - Shelby is currently located in Lake Hopatcong, NJ.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
