and support the little stores:) Coconut is a puppy in a 5 yr old body! Love her! Save her today!! OWNER DIED:( in Shelter NYC foster mom writes: Coco is the most loving dog I have met. She can’t contain her excitement when she meets new people or sees old friends - tail waging, smiling and hugs/kisses. She has had a rough month given her owner died and she spent two weeks in a shelter. She has been well behaved in house from the start– completely bathroom trained, no eating aggression, wears all leashes and harnesses. She does become anxious with too much stimuli when taken outside. She has barked and lunged at other dogs in the street or had threatening body language towards walkers/skateboarders, ut she has not physically made contact with anyone on street, and we are working on redirecting her when she sees other dogs. She’s a great running buddy – will match your pace. She doesn’t care too much for treats, but loves any attention. Coco will immediately make it her duty to love and protect anyone she lives with. COCO 5y yr old female Labrador Pit mix, hence the name Labritti, very soft face –50lbs –originally a Stray, – dropped off at precinct, adopted and then her owner died:((( Good w/ big dogs she knows so slow intro is advised, NO small animals or children, best in a country setting. If you are looking for a watch pup, she's your girl. A volunteer writes: Coconut, our all white pitti, is a stunning solid white girl except for her ears which have a couple of polka dot spots on her ears. Jackson Pollack at work perhaps? Coco is a fun loving, affectionate little girl. She loves to play and pranced her way through the park trying to engage all we met. Her tail never stops wagging and wags even harder when she sees kids. Or, maybe it was the ball they were playing with? Nonetheless, this little girl wants to play and have fun and invites all to participate in her joy of life. She is super affectionate, sits on command, takes treats so gently and is a wonderful partner to walk with as she simply wants to meet everyone she sees. She is housetrained--Meet Coco , share in her joy at simply being alive, and you will wonder how you made it this long without this extraordinary little girl by your side. PLEASE fill out an application on http://www.zanisfurryfriends.org & email to dogs@zanisfurryfriends.org Please consider providing a home for more than one dog, especially if you are considering adopting a puppy. Dogs are pack animals and very much enjoy as well as need other dog company to learn to play, socialize and be good companion animals to people. The upside to this is that you won't feel as guilty leaving them alone and you get twice the love. Some of our CAT friends and maybe a couple of dogs will be at Petco E86th/Lex on Sundays. Usually they are in our foster homes so this is a bit more stressful and a slightly artificial environment but we do want them to be seen and find their furever homes too. Please come! And if you can't adopt, you can always donate! If you want to know about cats/dogs specifically being shown at our adoption locations, please email us cats@zanisfurryfriends.org closer to the date so we know your interest and will make every effort to have that pet at the event or let you know how and where you can meet. It is extemely helpful and speeds up adoption if the application is filled out prior to visiting us so please do that before coming to our weekend events. Our weekend locations are: Sundays usually and some Saturdays. Follow us on FB for latest updates. Usually we are in our foster homes so all this is a bit more stressful but we do want to be seen and find our furever homes. Please come! And if you can't adopt, maybe you can foster. And you can always donate:) Cats and Dogs are spayed/neutered, UTD w/ all age appropriate shots and microchipped. Cats are feline combo tested for FIV/FeLV; dogs are heartworm tested and rabies vax'd, (NOT lyme vaxed but we seriously recommend it); rabbits are spayed/neutered. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
