d Observations with Cats:Good Observations with Kids: Good Currently Living at: DC area Foster home -Goofy needs a forever home! Read more about Goofy below. Questions? Feel free to email me at: lolasgotbling@aol.com Thanks for your interest in this awesome dog! Lola Meet Goofy, a super adorable, fun loving, 1 year old boy. Just like his Disney namesake, he is a very happy dog & a total sweetheart. Don't you love those eyes??? Goofy just arrived in the DC area. Notes from his adoption coordinator: "I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours with Goofy at the adoption event this weekend. What a super love bug! I fell completely in love with his big personality. He got into a bit of mischief - tried to steal toys off of the shelf at Felix & Oscar. I had a long talk with him about how shoplifting could land him back in jail - ha! We recommend that his future owner be experienced in owning big dogs. He will need either a big yard or a large space to run in because he's a young guy with a lot of energy. He also enjoys trips to the dog park. Remember - a tired pup is a good pup! He pretty much likes all other dogs...of course there are dogs that don't like him. Same as the world of humans! He's very strong and he needs someone who can handle him - physically. We recommend that he be adopted by a family with older children - 12 or older. We have come to that conclusion based on the way he plays, his youth, and his strength. Like all young dogs, he will need a decent amount of structure, exercise and training. He will bark when someone new enters the home but he's fine as soon as he realizes they're a friend. Goofy is the kind of dog who will lay down on the floor (or sofa!) with you & let you love on him. He's a good dog and we want him (& his adopters!) to be set up for success. Proper training will take Goofy from "good" dog to GREAT! Be sure to check out his video!!! I have more pictures & videos I can send to you directly. Such an AWESOME DOG!!!" Like most shelter dogs, Goofy may need a refresher on house training and crate training. We ask all of DC PAWS’ fosters to work on both house and crate training with their foster dog. If you are interested in adopting Goofy, please submit an adoption application at http://dcpawsrescue.org/adoption-info/.If you are interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application at http://dcpawsrescue.org/adoption-info About DC PAWS Rescue Our rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based dog and cat rescue in the DC area. We rescue from Pickens County, SC (see additional information below), as well as DC local area shelters, such as Prince Georges County, MD and Wicomico County, MD. We partner with a local rescuer in Pickens County, SC, who saves adoptable cats and dogs from the county’s animal control facility, which lacks the resources to facilitate adoptions to the public. Without a mechanism for local adoptions, all animals not claimed within the mandated hold period are euthanized. For the animals in this rural area, rescue is really the only lifeline. Our rescue partner not only works with DC PAWS to save as many dogs and cats as possible, but she has also established a successful spay/neuter clinic in the community to decrease the number of homeless and unwanted animals over the long term. BE A FOSTER: Fosters make it possible for DC PAWS to save and care for homeless, neglected and abandoned animals! Sponsors help us provide critical medical care, food, boarding and other support for animals facing euthanasia. Individuals who sponsor a dog or cat receive special recognition on the animal's profile.  Sponsorships can also be made in honor or memory of a loved one, and you may designate to whom DC Paws Rescue should provide notice of your gift. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
