he even likes playing in the rain and dipping her toes in the water. She's been kept in a dane-sized crate during the typical work day, and seems to do just fine. She's potty trained and knows all the basic commands - quick learner, almost knows how to shake with just a few training sessions. Really good at listening and responds immediately when you tell her 'no'. She's definitely a couch potato! Likes to sit next to you on the bed or couch and get head/back scratches. She's gotten along well with our dogs and when it's nap time, our labs like to sleep right outside her crate and give each other kisses when they wake up. Her favorite toys: tennis balls, tug o war toys, and LOVES things that squeak. Particularly a snake toy with squeakers... can be found at HEB. She likes to bite down on plush toys when she gets excited and likes to throw her toys around and chase them. While she likes bacon treats, she gets way more excited about steamed carrots! She also loves to chew on raw-hide alternative style bones - we use Smart Bones. She is not a barker, does not spook with storms, and she is pretty calm most of the time with little spurts of energy when it is playtime. Super sweet girl, and pays attention to everything. When she wants to go potty, play, or just get out of her crate, she has a quiet little whimper paired with puppy eyes. We gave her a bath in our shower and she did well with one person comforting her, while the other person scrubbed. She is so observant and so sweet, but definitely needs attention and love. I think she really misses interaction and cuddles. She never wants playtime to end and gets so excited to play with toys. I definitely think she loves her own space, she liked going back to her crate to sleep...but probably would choose the couch or dog bed if she was able to roam freely haha." This sweet girl is as happy as can be and has a contagious zest for life. She's lived with dogs of all sizes in the past, along with a cat and kids, and has been a playful girlfriend to all. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
