before you're on her favorites list. You can always tell when Yancey sees her favorite people - when they walk through the door, she twirls in circles and hops in excitement! Yancey has been a wonderful guest on sleepovers with volunteers - she's house-trained and can be left alone without any issues. Yancey likes to chill and takes frequent naps throughout the day. She's the ultimate Netflix marathon companion and will gladly sit through just about any show! But when you're ready to hit the trail, Yancey's rarin' to go! She enjoys a good run or jog, often going 4 miles around the trail, but she'll adjust her speed to yours, so if you want to go for a leisurely stroll, Yancey is game for that too. Her favorite thing to do afterwards is to cozy up for cuddles and kisses. Yancey loves car rides and quietly sits taking in the sights and sounds. She's all about the journey and the destination, especially if the road leads to Starbucks for some yummy puppy whip! Yancey also enjoys learning new things and is in the Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Yancey has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help her learn the skills to become the best dog she can be! She is learning skills like sit and down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told "free," and coming when called. Once Yancey successfully completes all the skills on her training plan, she will be considered TOP Dog Ready! Yancey is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA's Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with Yancey after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA's CGC program, on which the TOP was based: https://vimeo.com/89434193 Are you looking for a pup that's a combination of athlete and couch potato? Yancey's your girl! You take the lead and Yancey will go with the flow. Come meet her!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
