My name is Sissy, and I am a 3 year old Pitbull mix. I am LOADED with personality and sweetness. I have been here since October 14, and I am so ready to be adopted by my forever family. Don’t you just love my black and white coat?! The volunteers are calling me a mini Pitty, and sometimes a pocket Pitty…heck, sometimes it is just plain old Sissy Pitty! I am a sweet, friendly girl, although I am initially nervous with strangers. It does not take me long to warm up and love just about everybody. Seriously, how cute am I? I'm a bit fearful with other dogs so I may need to be an only pet. But if you have a calm dog that won't scare me, I may be ok. I just need to meet them first! Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, it appears that I have developed Diabetes Insipidus (not diabetes). I am on a pill form of medication but the doctors are working to get the dosage just right. If the pills don't help me, I may need to go to the injectable kind. Don't let that scare you! Injections are easy to give and you can learn very quickly! But let's not put the cart before the horse. DI makes me drink a lot of water, which means I have to ‘go’ a lot. It would be great if I could find a family where someone is home for at least part of the day. I do my best to hold it, but I just cannot make it as long as other dogs can. But once my medicine dosage is right, most of my symptoms may go away! No matter…look at this face! I am an adoption waiting to happen. Who could resist me? No one, I tell you, because that is just the kind of gal that I am. HA…you are still reading! That means that you want me…oh, you know that you do. Just so you know, I was found as a stray. It is so hard to believe that my family have not come for me, but their loss is your gain! I certainly will not let this get me down. I am keeping my options open. There could be a whole new world out there for me to explore (or at the very least, a whole new backyard!) As you can probably tell by now, I just cannot contain my enthusiasm for life. I am a snuggle bug who just wants to be loved. I like children, and I am a very easy walker. I am available to adopt or as a foster to adopt. The volunteers tell me that I am spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on my shots. I could be the love of your life if you let me. Please come down to the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter and ask to spend some time with me…I am waiting!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
