or my forever home where I can show you how much I will love you. Here is what my foster mom has to say about me. I'm crate and potty trained, I know how to use the doggie door. I'm very loving and affectionate, My foster mom says I'm very smart. I know sit, shake, down, sit at a distance, leash trained, and I will sit and wait for your command. I take treats gently, I'm not food/toy aggressive. I ride in the car very well. I enjoy going on walks. I love to play in the hose with the water, you can see my videos and how excited I get. I play with 4 other doggies that live with me. I'm a pretty mellow boy that just enjoys the company of my human friends. I like to play with toys sometimes, I love Peanut Butter in my kong. I'm get timid/scared around men at times, please give me time to warm up to you. My foster mom takes me to petco and it was very scary for me, but I'm getting better each time. I listen very well. Kids really scare me, so I would really prefer NO KIDS, but if you have kids and they are older then 16 that would be ok. All I want to do is please you, I love to stay by your hip and look up at you and show you my love. If you would like to meet me please email from this page, and if you do have other dogs I would love to meet them as well. NO CATS please. Love, Gus *Please Note: This animal is courtesy posted for Maricopa County Animal Care & Control and is at the EAST VALLEY facility (2630 W. Rio Salado Parkway, Mesa). Different adoption fees/policy apply. Please visit MCACC's website http://www.maricopa.gov/pets/locations.aspx for hours and detailed location information. You may wish to call 602-506-7387 (PETS) and provide the animal's A# above to verify that it is still available and/or has not been moved to a different adoption center for more visibility to potential adopters.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
