ained Yes History: Stray Adoption Fee: $325 (Adoption Fee includes age appropriate vaccinations, Heartworm test (if old enough), Microchip, and Spay/Neuter surgery. From the Foster: My name is Hendrix, but my friends call me “Hendrix – the tan colored Cookie Monster!” I love to eat, and play, and be with my friends. Rawhides and toys are the best, and they keep me occupied inside the house, and while playing outside, especially those squeaky toys, and ones that I can’t destroy in thirty seconds flat. I love going for walkies, and my favorites are trails that my foster mom takes me to, in Burnsville, with lots, and lots, of trees, birds, rabbits, and squirrels to watch, and big hills going up and down. I make it a point to try and greet every human friend that I encounter, on our big walks, whether they are dog fans, or not. I just have to show them how much they could love me too, since I know deep down that everyone loves me and thinks I am adorable too, plus I have to show them my great exuberance for life. I came to Carver Scott, on a mysterious journey (to my new foster family and rescue), through Minneapolis Animal Control. I spent almost seventy days at MACC, before being taken in by my new rescue, and super fun foster family. So, I haven’t been able to share much of my mysterious journey, with my new family, but I let them know how much I love my new foster home, by doing a happy dance anytime we pull into the driveway, and I realize where I am. In addition to eating, playing roughly with my toys, and going on great walks, I love most of all these things: cuddling with my foster mom, sleeping in my foster fam’s king size bed, at night, with them, snoozing on the couch, and back scratches. I love back scratches! And when there aren’t any great human friends around to scratch my itchy back, I just plop down, on the grass, and scratch away in the leaves. In my backyard, I love to terrorize the squirrels, chase the occasional rabbit running by, and sun bathe. I prefer to be in the backyard, with my fun friends, and not on my own. And, during the day, when my foster family is away, I snooze, in my kennel, or play quietly, with my great toy collection, and await their return later in the afternoon. I would love to find my perfect family, that I know is out there, who will provide great back scratches, and take me on awesome trails, for walks, and provide me lots of treats continually. In return, I promise to show everyone how much I love all people, give the best face kisses and earlobe nibbles, and how much I want to greet all those I happen to see. My new perfect family may, or may not, have another canine family member, as I am fine with being the center of attention. I will just have to make sure that my new family knows that I need slow intros, to other canine family members, as my family says I can be a bit “dog selective,” whatever that means. Later, in November, I will be having a pesky surgery to remove three bad teeth that have been giving me some bother. As soon as those three annoyances are out of my mouth, then I will be ready to head to my forever home, full of yummy treats, and rawhides. Please come to my next adoption event, at Carver Scott Humane Society, because you know that I can’t wait to meet you. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
