me! But now I love it so much I turn over on my back and wiggle in it. I used to walk with my tail between my legs, but now I’m so happy I strut my beautiful self when we go on walks. You see, I had it rough for the first 2 years of my life. When my foster mom found me I was covered in blood and had major skin infections; my toenails were so long they curled under and had grown into my pads. I had surgery because my infection was so deep it had to be taken out surgically! Dr. Carter ran tests and found there were only a few antibiotics that would help cure me. I’m also eating a special food, probably for the rest of my life. I want to be with my humans so much that I have a little separation anxiety. Fast forward 3 months… my foster mom noticed I was limping a bit and whimpered once while getting up. She took me back to Dr. Carter, who x-rayed me and told me I have “Lumbo-Sacral Disease”, but tells me the pain can be controlled with medicine. My x-rays also showed I’d been shot with a BB gun! The BB’s are still inside, and my little tail has been broken and healed back. It’s a little crooked - but I am still very pretty, it just makes me “special”. Despite all I have been through, I love people and want a loving parent that I can love and adore. I snore when I sleep. (My foster mom thinks it cute.) I am good with other dogs yet I like to be the center of attention so I push other dogs out of the way. Cats, they’re another story, I just don't like them. My foster mommy is teaching me the "leave it" command whenever I see a cat, I am getting better at walking past them but don't want them around me. If you are looking for a friend to snuggle with, to go on walks with (so we can exercise together) and to also lay on the couch and watch TV together… then I am the girl for you. If you feel your home might be the right place for such a great dog - the place to start is with the adoption application found at .dfwrescueme/adopt. Once submitted, the foster will contact you promptly to tell you more and to arrange a time to meet! The adoption fee for all of our dogs is $250.00, which includes their vaccinations and spay/neuter. Abigale is participating in the DFW Rescue Me Guest Dog Program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by their foster, not by DFWRM. .

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
