. Her children, who live out of town have asked me to help Beauty find a new home. Beauty is a 6 year old female pitbull. Two years ago, Elizabeth adopted her from the Everman Animal Shelter, when she was on "death row", and (it turns out) on death's door. Elizabeth spent the first few days, nursing Beauty back to health, with spoon fed chicken broth and just enough sugar water, to keep her going. Beauty had a sad history, of having been used for breeding and possibly fighting. Her ears were cut off and she had lots of scars, which have healed. She was heart worm positive. Elizabeth tended to Beauty and soon she became stronger. She had been with Elizabeth about two months, when Elizabeth suffered a terrible head injury. Now, it was Beauty's turn to be the nurse and she stayed by Elizabeth's side, as she began the slow recovery process. They have been the best of friends and now Beauty needs a special person to take her in. She will repay your friendship with steadfast devotion and love. Beauty is a medium sized pit bull, spayed and up to date on shots. She no longer has heart worms, but her heart was damaged from the parasite and so she needs a relatively sedate life. Due to her abusive past, she does not like other dogs in her space, though she does get along with nice neighbor dogs, who stay on their side of the fence. We simply don't know how she'll respond to cats, as she's not been introduced to them. BEAUTY LOVES ALL PEOPLE. She has had a lot of folks coming and going in her home, since Elizabeth had many friends and home health folks visiting. Beauty loved them all. She is good with children. She loves to run around her small yard, but needs to be able to stop when she is tired. She likes to "play" with her stuffed animals that Elizabeth provided. We want to honor Elizabeth by finding the perfect home for his loving dog. If you feel your home might be the right place for such a great dog - the place to start is with the adoption application found at www.dfwrescueme.org/adopt. Once submitted, the foster will contact you promptly to tell you more and to arrange a time to meet! The adoption fee for all of our dogs is $250.00, which includes their vaccinations and spay/neuter. Beauty is participating in the DFW Rescue Me Guest Dog Program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by their foster, not by DFWRM.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
