ve time for him. When he dumped him at the shelter, he was told his dog would be put to sleep because no one adopts pit bulls in OK. He just turned and walked out. Then he came back and said if the county could help him with the neuter he would keep him... so they gave him a certificate and he took him to the vet, got him neutered AND are you ready for this... took him back to the shelter and told them he thought he would be more desirable now that he was neutered. They told him AGAIN pit bulls do not get adopted they just euthanized them --- he walked out. Well, Gus' story touched our hearts - this dog did nothing wrong but be in the wrong place with the wrong owner and he deserves every chance to have a wonderful life! Gus is good with people and dogs, ( no cats). He is fully-vetted, and very handsome, and such a sweet boy. Gus is doing great. He is a very very adoptable/lovable dog - stable and sweet personality. Gus is house trained and does fine in his crate when his foster day is not home, but he expects he would probably be fine left out of the crate too. He isn't destructive. He is very people friendly and likes cuddling up on the couch. Mostly chill indoors as long as he gets some daily exercise. Needs a tall enough fence if let outside off leash as we can tell he knows how to eyeball low spots and how to jump, and may do so if something catches his interest. He seems good with strangers but not sure about other dogs. He definitely likes/needs his walks and is OK on the leash some/most of the time but does pull when another dog or rabbit/etc pops into his field of view. He will pace around indoors if not walked. When indoors he does bark sometimes at things going on outside that catch his attention, but not an annoying constant bark. He is pretty obedient and knows at least "sit" command. He is lightly playful and can be a little mouthy in play but has a soft mouth. His foster dad has not seen any fear or aggression in him. He will occasionally pop his front paws up onto the kitchen counter when he thinks he is not watching, but responds to verbal correction and he isn't quite tall enough to reach much anyway. :) He so deserves a forever home. Put in an application today to meet him..

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
